Song of the Day #3,528: ‘2’ – H.E.R.

I have a pretty extensive music collection, but nowhere near extensive enough to provide fodder for 31 songs named after the numbers one through 31.

So one of the great things about this challenge is how it has forced me to discover new music by artists I’d never even heard of.

Artists such as R&B singer H.E.R., who has released four EPs over the past two years and been promoted by Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Bryson Tiller and others.

H.E.R. has recorded under a veil of secrecy, hiding her name and face so that fans will focus on the music. Internet sleuths quickly figured out that she is actually Gabi WIlson of California, a 20-year-old performer who made a splash during her teens with well-received appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America and The View.

She’s all grown up now, providing a sultry, slow-rolling banger that’s perfect for day two of my 31 Numbered Songs challenge.

[Verse 1]
It’s cool
It’s really never been that deep
Wasn’t thinking ’bout you
‘Cause you didn’t give a fuck about me
Thought I was up in my room
Crying myself to sleep
I was with a better you
While you were busy playing me

[Chorus]
I was playing you too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too

[Verse 2]
Thought I wouldn’t find out
Thought I didn’t know how to play the game
Coulda screamed at you for hours
Instead I was screaming somebody else’s name
There are no rules
Now I can do whatever I want
I can never lose
So it’s funny how you thought you won

[Chorus]
But I was playing too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
Too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
I was playing you too-too-too
Too-too-too
Too-too-too

I’ve never heard of “her,” but I like “her” sound.

When I think of songs with “2” the first one that comes to mind is Joe Jackson’s lovely “Be My Number 2.”

  2. Peg Clifton says:

So two can be too ? She has a nice sound
