Song of the Day #3,518: ‘This is Me’ – The Greatest Showman cast

Surprise hit The Greatest Showman is the only musical nominated in the Best Original Song category this year. (You could make an argument that another nominated film is a musical, but I would argue that you are wrong, and I would be right).

This is one of those movies scoffed at by critics (55% on the Tomatometer!) but loved by audiences. It has hit a nerve, cleaning up at the box office and topping the album charts.

I believe today’s nominated song, which most clearly states one of the film’s central themes, is the key to The Greatest Showman‘s success.

‘This is Me’ is performed by the collection of freaks and circus performers Hugh Jackman’s P.T. Barnum has taken for granted on his way to the top. Mingling with the high-brow set, Barnum shuts his cast of misfits out to avoid embarrassment. The bearded lady, played by Hawaiian singer/actress Keala Settle, responds with this defiant anthem.

Reading through this clip’s comments on YouTube, it’s clear that the song, and The Greatest Showman in general, has resonated with outcasts of all sorts, and especially young ones. My wife, a high school teacher, says that many of her students love this film.

You don’t need to be a bearded lady to know how a bearded lady feels. Maybe you’re gay, or Black, or goth, or a science nerd in a school full of jocks. Most of us are too much of something or not enough of something else, and it’s empowering to embrace those differences with a simple declaration: This is me.

This scene was a highlight of 2017 for me, along with two other songs from The Greatest Showman (one featuring Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman, the other Efron and Zendaya). If I had an Oscar vote, I might just send it this way to honor both ‘This is Me’ and the rest of the soundtrack.

[Verse 1: Lettie Lutz]
I am not a stranger to the dark
“Hide away”, they say
“‘Cause we don’t want your broken parts”
I’ve learned to be ashamed of all my scars
“Run away”, they say
“No one’ll love you as you are”

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
But I won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Post-Chorus: Ensemble]
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

[Verse 2: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble]
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away ’cause today, I won’t let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades
And reaching for the sun
(We are warriors)
Yeah, that’s what we’ve become
(Yeah, that’s what we’ve become)

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble]
Won’t let them break me down to dust
I know that there’s a place for us
For we are glorious

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
Gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I’m meant to be, this is me
Look out ’cause here I come
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Post-Chorus: Lettie Lutz and Ensemble, Ensemble]
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me

[Bridge: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble]
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
And I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
There’s nothing I’m not worthy of
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh

[Pre-Chorus: Lettie Lutz]
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is bruised
This is who I’m meant to be, this is me

[Chorus: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble, Both]
Look out ’cause here I come
(Look out ’cause here I come)
And I’m marching on to the beat I drum
(Marching on, marching, marching on)
I’m not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

[Outro: Lettie Lutz, Ensemble, Both]
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
When the sharpest words wanna break me down
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
(Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Oh-oh-oh-oh)
I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)
This is me

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I guess we’ll save the debate on whether Coco is a musical for another day, but I say you’re wrong and it is.

You’re right, however, in your praise of The Greatest Showman and this nominated song. I predict this gets the Oscar given today’s political climate.

  2. Peg says:

Did not see this movie. Hope to catch up with it at some point.

  3. willedare says:

Thank you for catching me up to speed on this song and this movie!

  4. Maddie says:

Love this movie and I’m glad it’s had such success with audiences. I’m also on the Coco is a movie with music featured side of the debate. I don’t consider Inside Llewyn Davis a musical either. 😛

  5. Amy says:

I’m with Clay and Maddie on the musical/movie with music debate, and I, too, would cast my vote for this song. Loved the songs, which were written by the duo behind the songs in La La Land, which is also a musical. 😉
