Song of the Day #3,496: ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ – Journey

[Note: This week I’m turning the blog over to my niece, Madison, for a continued look back at 2017]

Hi everyone! Millenial in the house! My uncle trusted me, his television obsessed niece, to guest blog for the week in order to feature five of the best musical moments on the small screen in 2017. Get psyched, people. I’ve made these selections with much careful thought and debate. Every show I’ve chosen frequently and meaningfully uses music. The songs featured add layers to each scene and some weave into the fabric of their show’s narrative in such a way that it becomes difficult to hear the song without picturing the characters and imagery alongside it (and vice-versa).

Let’s kick this week off with a fun one. Netflix made waves in 2017 with its brand new original series, GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling). Alison Brie and Marc Maron lead an ensemble cast filled with diverse and captivating women. GLOW delivered an undeniable first season filled with strong character arcs, fight choreography, ridiculous costumes, hilarious Alison Brie accents and, of course, 80s music. Tons of it. After all, what adds pizzazz to a wrestling match like a little Journey?

Betty Gilpin acted her ass off as Debbie Eagan, an ex-soap opera star turned stay at home mother turned wrestling icon. After discovering that her best friend, Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), has been sleeping with her husband, Debbie channels her anger into a very real fight with Ruth in the wrestling ring where rehearsals for Sam Sylvia’s (Marc Maron) new show are taking place. Sam can’t believe his luck as inspiration comes flooding in from all the drama unfolding right before his eyes. He’s found his stars.

Sam’s vision of what his show could be with these two ladies at the helm is set to “Separate Ways” by Journey. This is the final scene of the very first episode of GLOW and it certainly sets the tone for what is to come.

[Verse 1]
Here we stand
Worlds apart, hearts broken in two, two, two
Sleepless nights
Losing ground, I’m reaching for you, you, you
Feeling that it’s gone can change your mind
If we can’t go on to survive the tide, love divides

[Chorus]
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you, one night will remind you
How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you, true love won’t desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched and went our separate ways

[Verse 2]
Troubled times
Caught between confusion and pain, pain, pain – distant eyes
Promises we made were in vain, in vain, in vain
If you must go, I wish you love
You’ll never walk alone, take care, my love
Miss you, love

[Chorus]
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you, one night will remind you
How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you, true love won’t desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched and went our separate ways

[Chorus]
Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you, one night will remind you
How we touched and went our separate ways
If he ever hurts you, true love won’t desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched and went our separate ways

[Outro]
I still love you, girl, I really love you, girl
And if he ever hurts you, true love won’t desert you
No, no!

Thank you for taking the reins!
I loved the first season of Glow, and this clip is a great reminder of how fun and different the show is.
I’m looking forward to the rest of your picks. 🙂

Looking forward to this week’s posts by your niece.😊

Great first pick. Hard to believe this is the same person from Community, but she is great in this role.

  3. Amy says:

One of the things I love about this show is how well the 80s —clothes, references, music — is integrated into the show. I also appreciate learning a bit more about the whole spectacle of wrestling.

  4. Peg Clifton says:

Wow! I am so excited about this week’s theme! And I will definitely be looking for this show on Netflix tonight. Now I have a perfect solution as to what to watch tomorrow night during the state of the union 😊

Good job by the rookie commentator. Now the blog’s owner can kick back and take a vacation.

  6. Amy says:

Also interesting to see that this is just the 3rd Journey song featured on the blog. Their songs lend themselves to cinema, as they are often quite dramatic. This song especially so.

  7. Alex says:

I’m catching up with this week’s blog and excited to binge the first three tonight. I’ve never seen this show, but I love the 80s sound and look.
