Song of the Day #3,489: ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ – John Denver

Continuing my pattern of looking back at 2017 well into 2018, this week I’ll highlight five of my favorite musical moments from last year’s movies.

Two of these picks are performed by characters in the films, one is played through headphones by a character in the film, one is a song used as score and the last is a traditional instrumental score (and a bit of a cheat, as I’ll explain when I get there).

Where possible, I’ll embed a clip of the actual scene as well as the original song.

My first choice comes from the Steven Soderbergh film Logan Lucky, a southern-fried twist on the Ocean’s 11 heist genre. This was a fun and often sweet film packed with appealing actors taking turns chewing the scenery (Daniel Craig, who knew you had that in you?).

The film’s most emotional moment centers around a beauty pageant in which Sadie, the daughter of Channing Tatum’s Jimmy Logan, is scheduled to perform Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella.’

When Sadie steps onto the stage, she spots her dad in the back of the auditorium and calls an audible, performing John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ instead. It’s his favorite song, one they’ve bonded over, and a tribute to his beloved West Virginia.

Logan Lucky could be accused of poking fun at southerners, but scenes like this one demonstrate Soderbergh’s deep affection for the South (he was born in Atlanta, and raised in Georgia, Virginia and Louisiana).

Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue ridge mountain, Shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories, gather round her
Miners’ lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, to the country roads

I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me
Radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, country roads

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mamma
Take me home, to the country roads

Take me home, that country road
Take me home, that country road

This song was actually featured twice in film last year. In arguably the most memorable and emotional scene of an otherwise lesser sequel of Kingsmen, the song was sung by Merlin as he faced his dramatic fate:

Very true. And I’ll never look at this song the same way again because of Kingsman, though I loved Logan Lucky as a movie 🙂

  2. Clay says:

In fact, it was featured in three different films, the third being Alien: Covenant. I’ll elaborate a bit on a post later this week.

  3. Peg Clifton says:

Love this topic and look forward to the week of songs and videos. I thought this movie was such a wonderful surprise and this scene was a favorite.
