Song of the Day #3,488: ‘Come Monday’ – Jimmy Buffett

Every time I hear Jimmy Buffett’s Songs You Know By Heart, I wonder why I don’t play it far more often. As much as I dislike the idea of greatest hits albums, I can’t help but feel that this particular collection is one of the best records I own.

I’ve heard other Jimmy Buffett songs over the years, either online or on the Sirius/XM Margaritaville station, but nothing that’s flipped my lid the way these 13 songs do.

‘Come Monday’ is among the best of the best. This melancholy tribute to his wife, written while on tour, was released in 1974 and became his first top 40 single.

It’s also one of “The Big 8,” a group of songs Buffett has played at every live show for decades. Here’s the full list: ‘Margaritaville,’ ‘Come Monday,’ ‘Fins,’ ‘Volcano,’ ‘A Pirate Looks at Forty,’ ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise,’ ‘Why Don’t We Get Drunk,’ and ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.’

Every one, of course, is on Songs You Know By Heart.

Headin’ up to San Francisco
For the Labor Day weekend show
I’ve got my Hush Puppies on
I guess I never was meant for
Glitter rock and roll
And honey I didn’t know
That I’d be missin’ you so

Come Monday It’ll be all right
Come Monday I’ll be holding you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze
And I just want you back by my side

Yes it’s been quite a summer
Rent-a-cars and west bound trains
And now you’re off on vacation
Somethin’ you tried to explain
And darlin’ I love you so that’s
The reason I just let you go

Come Monday It’ll be all right
Come Monday I’ll be holding you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze
And I just want you back by my side

I can’t help it honey
You’re that much a part of me now
Remember the night in Montana when
We said there’d be no room for doubt

I hope you’re enjoyin’ the scenery
I know that it’s pretty up there
We can go hikin on Tuesday
With you I’d walk anywhere
California has worn me quite thin
I just can’t wait to see you again

Come Monday It’ll be all right
Come Monday I’ll be holding you tight
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze
And I just want you back by my side

I have a soft spot for this song in particular because I used to play it with Mark in college. Buffett, much like the Eagles with whom he is now touring, pulled together that fusion of country and rock, though Buffett also threw in that island vibe. Good stuff!

    Great songs!
