Song of the Day #3,358: ‘Happy Together’ – The Turtles

Our third entry in the 30 Day Music Challenge calls for ‘A Song That Reminds You of Summertime.’

I struggled a bit with this one. My first instinct was to think back on various “Songs of the Summer” — from Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ to Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ or Luis Fonsi’s ‘Despacito.’ But those songs don’t really invoke the season for me. The ‘Song of the Summer’ is more of a music industry concept than a mood-setter.

Instead, I imagined a song that uplifts me and puts a smile on my face, a song that brightens my day like metaphorical sunshine. And the first one to pop into my head was The Turtles’ ‘Happy Together.’

Ironically, this track was released in February of 1967, the dead of winter. Which might be the best time for a song that reminds you of summertime.

Your turn!

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it’s only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We’re happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

I agree that this song puts a smile on the face of almost anyone who listens to it, plays it and/or sings it. And I was happy to discover that it is quite easy to play on the ukulele ā€” an instrument that also tends to put a smile on one’s face as long (as it isn’t being played by Tiny Tim, who always used to unsettle me when I saw him perform on TV as a child…) Great choice for a song that reminds you of summertime!

I’m going with first song to pop to mind, which is Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer.”

This has always been our go-to first song to play as we left school to begin our summer vacation. So it had to be this lil’ classic. Thank you, Pokemon.

Daniel and I were discussing our picks, and, of course, this song came to mind. Glad you picked it!

Love your choice, Clay, and today’s topic. At first I was leaning “Come Monday” or some other Jimmy Buffet song. Ultimately, however, I opted to go with this little summery gem:

“I swear this summer will be summer camp, b****” is how Childish Gambino ends this bombastic track which is basically the egotistical rap song to end all egotistical rap songs. Let’s look back to the summer before my 9th grade year. I was the head drama counselor at my school’s summer camp and my job was to keep kids entertained with different drama games and shows in 30 minute intervals all day. That might be a weird backdrop to be the first moments when I truly started to fall in love with Childish Gambino’s music but there it was. This is the summer when I truly started to develop my confidence and being the drama jester that the kids idolized in the day and coming home and jamming out to tracks that are shamelessly braggadocious was the perfect cocktail. Whenever I hear this track and a few others off “Camp” which I first heard in these awesome live versions done for Last Fm. (one of which I’ve linked above) I can’t help but be taken back to that summer which is why this song perfectly fits today’s topic for me.

Well folks – to me, nothing says “summer” like this beauty form War … “Summer”.
