Song of the Day #1,495: ‘Call Me Maybe’ – Carly Rae Jepsen

For the past two years, I’ve spent a couple of weeks presenting each year’s “songs of the summer” — those inescapable, feel-good tracks dominating TV and radio airplay.

Inherent in my singling out those songs in July or August was the chauvinistic assumption that none of those songs would show up on my year-end best songs lists.

But last year that blew up in my face. I deliberately held Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ off of the summer list (though it clearly belonged) because I knew I would use it on the 2011 list (it wound up at #1, in fact). And I featured Nikki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’ and LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem’ but later had to present them in a mash-up in order to get around my no-repeat rule and put them on the best-of.

This year I decided I wouldn’t put myself in the same bind. I skipped the summer list and decided to recap the whole year in the first weeks of January. Will any of this year’s summer hits make the cut? Time will tell.

But I’ll take this opportunity to feature one song that has certainly earned the label ‘Song of the Summer.’ Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ was released in her native Canada last September but became a sensation after Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez tweeted about it in January of 2012.

Since then it has climbed up the charts, spending a couple of months at #1 and entering the culture in all sorts of strange ways (search YouTube for videos of athletes, politicians and other entertainers performing their versions).

The song is what you might call Katy Perry Lite (unless such a concept is too redundant to make logical sense). It’s harmless fun, catchy as hell, the kind of music you blast in a convertible on the way to the beach — a perfect summer song.

However, with the lineup of great albums I’ve already heard this year plus new material on the way from Ben Folds Five, Aimee Mann, Bob Dylan, Tift Merritt and others, I can’t imagine this will ever crack my year-end list. So please, enjoy.

I threw a wish in the well,
Don’t ask me, I’ll never tell
I looked to you as it fell,
And now you’re in my way

I’d trade my soul for a wish,
Pennies and dimes for a kiss
I wasn’t looking for this,
But now you’re in my way

Your stare was holdin’,
Ripped jeans, skin was showin’
Hot night, wind was blowin’
Where you think you’re going, baby?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

It’s hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

You took your time with the call,
I took no time with the fall
You gave me nothing at all,
But still, you’re in my way

I beg, and borrow and steal
Have foresight and it’s real
I didn’t know I would feel it,
But it’s in my way

Your stare was holdin’,
Ripped jeans, skin was showin’
Hot night, wind was blowin’
Where you think you’re going, baby?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

It’s hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
I missed you so bad
I missed you so, so bad

Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
And you should know that
I missed you so, so bad

It’s hard to look right,
At you baby,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

Hey, I just met you,
And this is crazy,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

And all the other boys,
Try to chase me,
But here’s my number,
So call me, maybe?

Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
I missed you so bad
I missed you so, so bad

Before you came into my life
I missed you so bad
And you should know that

So call me, maybe?

Hadn’t seen the official video before now, cute twist at the end, also interesting that the scene depicted was in daylight as I think the lyrics clearly conjure up a night club scene.

When the song first started getting airplay, I argued to the kids that the lyrics contradicted themselves — that the ” before you came into my life I missed you so bad…” was incongruous to the first meeting. The kids vehemently disagreed. Yes, these are the silly debates we have in our car😊

Anyway, this is, without doubt, the song of the summer, and I am equally confident that you will not have to post a live version to feature it on your year end list.

But damn if the song isn’t catchy! It will now (again) be in my mind the rest of the day, Argh!

Probably the catchiest song I’ve heard in ages! The chat routlette video of the song is by far my favorite – if you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it right now! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCiY1y3uJ3o

This song -and the various videos it has spawned – got Maddie and me into a deep conversation about memes (is that an oxymoron? 😉 so I’m pleased to see that Carly Rae has inspired more than one interesting conversation in our home.
