Song of the Day #3,353: ‘Steal Away’ – Robbie Dupree

I’m wrapping up my two-week celebration of yacht rock with a song that really captures the era. Robbie Dupree’s ‘Steal Away’ has all the hallmarks of a great yacht rock song. It’s richly melodic, impeccably produced, smooth as all get-out and about nothing more or less than stealing away into the night with a forbidden love.

If only they were on a boat.

Additionally, the song’s keyboard part owes quite a debt to yacht rock classic ‘What a Fool Believes’ by The Doobie Brothers. But maybe that was cool, because Doobie Brothers lead singer Michael McDonald sings backup vocals on this track (as he did on seemingly every other song released around this time).

Dupree released a couple of other minor hits and continues recording and touring to this day. He has even performed with a tribute band called Yacht Rock Revue, fully embracing his place in American music history.

[Verse 1]
Come on and hold me
Just like you told me
Then show me
What I want to know

[Chorus 1]
Why don’t we steal away
Why don’t we steal away
Into the night
I know it ain’t right

[Verse 2]
Don’t tease me
Why don’t you please me
And show me
What you came here for

[Chorus 1]
Why don’t we steal away
Why don’t we steal away
Into the night
I know it ain’t right

[Hook]
Into the night, babe
Baby, tonight
Ooh

[Verse 2]
I caught you glancing my way
And I know what you’re after
No second chances tonight

[Bridge]
Why don’t we steal away
Why don’t we steal away
Why don’t we steal away
Why don’t we steal away

[Hook]
Into the night
I know it ain’t right
Into the night
I know it ain’t right

[Chorus 2]
Why don’t we steal away
I know it ain’t right
Into the night, babe

Why don’t we steal away
Make it tonight
Why don’t we steal away

I knew Michael McDonald was involved with this song, but never knew who actually sang it. Yacht Rock at its finest!

Meanwhile, the other day while discussing Yacht Rock, Daniel introduced me to the most recent offering of Yacht heavyweights Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, featured on Thundercat’s new release. Here they are performing on The Tonight Show. They still sound great and the bass solo at the end is truly something special. https://youtu.be/x8AgdI4eyFc

Many thanks for the focus on Yacht Rock. There is no doubt, I am a Yacht Rocker, as every song you featured is in my personal collection of music. No question, sitting on a deck, on a beautiful summer day, drinking a nice, cold beer … the ONLY music to listen to is Yacht Rock.

Sounds especially good to since a hurricane is bearing down on us 😞
