Song of the Day #3,280: ‘Higher Ground’ – Stevie Wonder vs. Michael Jackson

Fate has arranged the Montauk Madness bracket in a way that led to today’s spetacular Motown Showdown, pitting Stevie Wonder against Michael Jackson.

Wonder defeated Talking Heads in Round One, pulling in a sizable 71% of the vote. Michael Jackson fared even better, defeating Belle & Sebastian with 86%. Poor Belle & Sebastian… a top five band for me, but destined to ride the pine in the broader contest.

This is a doozy of a matchup but not a very difficult choice for me. While Wonder is the more prolific artist, and the more musically talented, I don’t love any of his songs as much as I love Michael Jackson’s best work. The King of Pop gets my vote.

[Verse 1]
People keep on learning
Soldiers keep on warring
World keep on turning
Because it won’t be too long

[Verse 2]
Powers keep on lying
While your people keep on dying
World keep on turning
Because it won’t be too long

[Chorus]
I’m so darn glad he let me try it again
Because my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
Going to keep on trying
Until I reach my highest ground

[Verse 3]
Teachers keep on teaching
Preachers keep on preaching
World keep on turning
Because it won’t be too long
Oh no

[Verse 4]
Lovers keep on loving
Believers keep on believing
Sleepers just stop sleeping
Because it won’t be too long
Oh no

[Chorus]
I’m so glad he let me try it again
Because my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
Going to keep on trying
Until I reach my highest ground
No one’s going to bring me down

[Outro]
Until I reach my highest ground
No one’s going to bring me down
Oh no
Until I reach my highest ground
Don’t let nobody bring you down (they’ll sho ’nuff try)

Well, as you know, a preview of this matchup was inadvertently revealed last week, resulting in my family spending weekend drives listening to Jackson and a Wonder songs back to back.

This is, indeed, a very competitive matchups of two Motown heavyweights who began as child stars and sustained their careers over decades to become legends. I suspect Jackson will win this matchup, and that’s fine with me, but my vote goes to Wonder based upon his musicianship and songwriting prowess.

  2. Rob says:

I’m a fan of both artists, but my vote goes to Stevie Wonder. The consistency of his work in the 70’s has no equal.

  3. Amy says:

I agonized over this choice until I had an epiphany and remembered the MJ calendar on my teenage self’s wall and realized that only one of these talented artists ever had my heart.

  4. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

    King of Pop. Enough said.

  5. Peg says:

    Enough said exactly Daniel!
