Song of the Day #3,269: ‘Diane Young’ – Vampire Weekend vs. Ben Folds Five

Two innovative indie bands face off today in Round Two of Montauk Madness.

Vampire Weekend got here by defeating Pink Floyd with 70% of the vote. Ben Folds Five had a slightly harder path, taking down Aimee Mann with 60%. I voted for Vampire Weekend and against Ben Folds Five in the first round, but would have reversed those votes had they switched their opponents.

I think if I’d been born ten years later, Vampire Weekend would have been a band that affected me the way Ben Folds Five did in my early twenties. As it is, the nostalgic power of the Five, coupled with their insane musicianship and brilliant songwriting, give them the edge.

[Verse 1]
You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves
I’d gone to find some better wheels
Four, five meters running round the bend
When the government agents surround you again

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

[Verse 2]
Out of control but you’re playing a role
Do you think you can go til the 18th hole
Or will you flip-flop the day of the championship?
Try to go it alone on your own for a bit

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

[Bridge]
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby it’s a light on
Baby baby baby it’s a lifetime
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Time, time, time, time, time, time
Baby baby baby baby ride on time

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

[Verse 3]
Irish and proud, baby, naturally
But you got the luck of a Kennedy
So grab the wheel, keep on holding it tight
‘Til you’re tottering off into that goodnight

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

[Bridge]
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Baby baby baby it’s a light on
Baby baby baby it’s a lifetime
Baby baby baby baby ride on
Time, time, time, time, time, time
Baby baby baby baby ride on time

[Breakdown]
Nobody knows what the future holds
And it’s bad enough just getting old
Live my life in self-defense
You know I love the past, ’cause I hate suspense…

[Hook]
If Diane Young won’t change your mind
Baby, baby, baby, baby right on time

This is a tough battle, as I appreciate the talent and songwriting of both of these groups immensely. In the end, I’m going for Ben Folds Five, as I find more of their songs emotionally resonant in addition to being wonderful to listen to on a musical level.

These are both great bands and I suspect I would have voted for Vampire Weekend over many other opponents, but BFF gets my vote here. If I were stuck on that fabled island and could only have the albums of one of these bands, it would be BFF.

It’s gonna be Vamp Weekend for this lady, though I’ll respect the majority vote when they inevitably lose 😦

Clay, you’ve put me in a terrible position here. I thought I had faced difficult decisions in this competition, little did I know the one I would have to face come today. I’ve been deliberating over this decision all day and I still am not sure if I’m content with my decision but luckily I’m not the only one deciding and of course I will be more than happy if either (though I would prefer both) of these fantastic bands make it far in this competition.

That being said I feel I have to go with… Vampire Weekend. Perhaps it’s for the same reason that you listed above. Though you introduced our family to Vampire Weekend and I didn’t exactly discover it, I felt like I had in many ways. Though I feel Whatever and Ever Amen and Contra stack up pretty evenly against eachother (my favorite albums by both of those bands) I have to give it to Vampire Weekend overall for their nuanced story telling and their ability to tackle religious conflicts or perfectly capture the feeling of love in probably my favorite love song of all time, Hannah Hunt.

For the record, Clay did not introduce us to Vampire Weekend 🙂
