Song of the Day #3,261: ‘Love Shines’ – Ron Sexsmith

Narrowing the first round of Montauk Madness down to 64 artists was a difficult task, particularly when it came to the final dozen or so contestants. To make room for a sentimental favorite like Toad the Wet Sprocket, I have to leave out The Wallflowers, The Who, Walk the Moon, Wilo and The White Stripes. And those are just the W’s.

I made a lot of hard decisions like that, which I could argue either way. If I started over, I might have a whole different lineup of acts filling out the 50-64 slots.

But I also made at least one glaring oversight, leaving out an artist who should have absolutely been in the first round. That was Ron Sexsmith. I’m not sure how I missed him when sifting through my iTunes library to compile the list, but he deserved a spot on the first ballot.

Depending on the competition, he might not have stood much of a chance of advancing, but I do feel bad for not giving him the chance.

So here’s his consolation prize: a featured slot holding down the fort while I tabulate the Round One results. My apologies, Ron.

In every nowhere town
There are somewhere dreams
Patiently holding out
To grab the brass ring

To see their dream come true
Sends a spark through dark end of the mind
Till light appears in happy tears
That’s where my love shines

If we’ve disquiet in mind
There are silent days
To see ourselves defined
By all we embrace

And I long to hold you with all my might
Through the night our hopes combine
To ignite our eyes like fire flies
That’s when our love shines

In every nowhere town
There are somewhere dreams
Gracefully reaching out
To pull love’s strings

I’ve seen what love can do, I understand
It’s like the candle glowing in the wine
It fills a heart with silver stars
That’s where my love shines

When light appears in happy tears
That’s where my love shines
My love shines

  1. Dana says:

Yes, for you, that’s a big omission. He probably would have beaten a few other artists (like Morrissey😄), but would have likely fallen by Round 2.
