Song of the Day #3,036: ‘Revolution Radio’ – Green Day

green_day_revolution_radioBefore today, I’ve posted only one Green Day song to the blog, and I started that post remarking that I was surprised I’d made it through 1,555 songs without featuring them. Well, I nearly made it another 1,500.

As I said back then, I’m indifferent to most of Green Day’s music but I really like their rock opera (and eventual Broadway musical) America Idiot. So it’s no coincidence that I like today’s SOTD, which Entertainment Weekly compares to that earlier work.

Their take:

With its monstrous riffs, radio-ready chorus and incendiary political message, this recalls American Idiot in all the right ways.

[Verse 1]
Scream, with your hands up in the sky
Like you want to testify
For the life that’s been deleted
Sing, like a rebel’s lullaby
Under the stars and stripes
For the lost souls that were cheated
We will be seen but not be heard

[Chorus]
We are Revolution Radio
Operation ‘No Control’
And the headline ‘My love’s bullet proof’
Give me cherry bombs and gasoline
Debutantes in surgery
And the headline ‘Legalize the truth’

[Verse 2]
Give me rage, like there’s tear gas in the crowd
Do you wanna live out loud?
But the air is barely breathing
Rise of the slums to the obsolete
The dawn of the new airwaves for the anti-social media

[Chorus]
We are Revolution Radio
Operation ‘No Control’
And the headline ‘My love’s bullet proof’
Give me cherry bombs and gasoline
Debutantes in surgery
And the headline ‘Legalize the truth’

[Middle 8]
We will be seen but not be heard
We are the songs of the disturbed

[Chorus]
We are Revolution Radio
Operation ‘No Control’
And the headline ‘My love’s bullet proof’
Give me cherry bombs and gasoline
Debutantes in surgery
And the headline ‘Legalize the truth’

  1. Dana says:

I’m also indifferent to much of Green Day’s work, including most, but not all, of American Idiot. On first listen, this one isn’t doing it for me.
