Song of the Day #3,006: ‘Closer’ – The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey

chainsmokers_closerIt’s time again for my quarterly look at “What the Kids are Listening To!” I will highlight the songs sitting at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and decide whether or not I have faith in the future of humanity — or at least humanity’s taste in popular music.

Sitting at #1 this week, as it has for the past three, is ‘Closer,’ by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. This is the first #1 song for both acts.

‘Closer’ is described (on Genius.com) as a “millennial romance anthem that celebrates youth and heartbreak.” As the band described it on Twitter, “this song is dedicated to anyone that hooked up with their EX and right after remember all the reasons why they broke up.”

This has a good sound and definitely captures a vibe. The Chainsmokers have been on a roll of late (and indeed, will show up again this week).

Verse 1: Andrew Taggart]
Hey, I was doing just fine before I met you
I drink too much and that’s an issue but I’m okay
Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet them
But I hope I never see them again

[Pre-Chorus: Andrew Taggart]
I know it breaks your heart
Moved to the city in a broke down car
And four years, no calls
Now you’re looking pretty in a hotel bar
And I-I-I can’t stop
No, I-I-I can’t stop

[Chorus: Andrew Taggart]
So baby pull me closer
In the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of the mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older

[Post-Chorus: Andrew Taggart]
We ain’t ever getting older
We ain’t ever getting older

[Verse 2: Halsey]
You look as good as the day I met you
I forget just why I left you, I was insane
Stay and play that Blink-182 song
That we beat to death in Tucson, okay

[Pre-Chorus: Halsey]
I know it breaks your heart
Moved to the city in a broke down car
And four years, no call
Now I’m looking pretty in a hotel bar
And I-I-I can’t stop
No, I-I-I can’t stop

[Chorus: Andrew Taggart & Halsey]
So baby pull me closer
In the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of the mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older

[Post-Chorus: Andrew Taggart & Halsey]
We ain’t ever getting older
We ain’t ever getting older

[Chorus: Andrew Taggart & Halsey]
So baby pull me closer
In the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of the mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older
We ain’t ever getting older (no we ain’t ever getting older)
We ain’t ever getting older (no we ain’t ever getting older)
We ain’t ever getting older (we ain’t ever getting older)
We ain’t ever getting older (no we ain’t ever getting older)
We ain’t ever getting older (no we ain’t ever getting older)

[Post-Chorus: Andrew Taggart & Halsey]
We ain’t ever getting older
No we ain’t ever getting older

These Chainsmokers seem to have come out of nowhere, at least to me. Today’s song is okay, but not all that catchy or memorable to me.
