Song of the Day #2,970: ‘Brass in Pocket’ – The Pretenders

the_pretendersI’ve never paid much attention to The Pretenders, in part because my wife has a visceral dislike of lead singer Chrissie Hynde (to clarify, it’s Hynde’s voice she dislikes, not the woman herself). I’m not sure why that matters all that much, because my wife dislikes many of the musical acts I enjoy, but it’s one reason I’ve neglected to explore the band’s music.

Another reason is my own dislike for the song ‘I’ll Stand by You,’ one of those syrupy power ballads either speaks to you on a deep emotional level or makes you want to wretch.

I didn’t realize The Pretenders were predominantly English (with the exception of Hynde, born in Akron, Ohio) or that two of their founding members died of drug-related causes within a year of each other just two albums into their career. Hynde recruited new band members, released another acclaimed album and continued to record through 2008.

The band’s debut album, released in January of 1980, is widely considered their best. It features the hit ‘Brass in Pocket’ (a song I know well but could never have told you its title) along with popular tracks ‘Precious,’ ‘Kid’ and the Kinks’ cover ‘Stop Your Sobbing.’

I don’t know if I’ll download this album like I did with Back in Black, but I’m definitely intrigued. If I do, I’ll be sure not to play it in front of my wife.

Got brass in pocket
Got bottle I’m gonna use it
Intention I feel inventive
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Got motion restrained emotion
Been driving Detroit leaning
No reason just seems so pleasing
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

Cause I gonna make you see
There’s nobody else here
No one like me
I’m special so special
I gotta have some of your attention give it to me

Got rhythm I can’t miss a beat
Got new skank it’s so reet
Got something I’m winking at you
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

Cause I gonna make you see
There’s nobody else here
No one like me
I’m special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me
Cause I gonna make you see
There’s nobody else here
No one like me
I’m special, so special
I gotta have some of your attention

Give it to me

I like the songs I know from the Pretenders with the notable exception of the insipid “I’ll Stand By You.” Couldn’t agree with you more on that one!

I’ve always found it interesting that Hynde allowed Rush Limbaugh to use “My City Was Gone” as his opening bumper. In doing some quick research this morning, I discovered that Rush used the song for years without permission because he loved the irony of using a liberal’s song with a liberal message to open a show where he makes fun of liberals. He also apparently really dug the bass line (can’t disagree with him there!). Years later, the record company sued to try to stop Rush from using the song, buy Hynde gave permission in exchange for a licensing fee she then donated to PETA. This was, apparently, okay with Rush because the only thing he hated more than PETA was the EPA, which was doing testing on animals objectionable to Hynde and PETA.

For those of you not familiar with the song, here you go:
