Song of the Day #2,969: ‘Back in Black’ – AC/DC

ac-dc_back_in_blackFrequent commenter Dana suggested last week that looking at commercial hits rather than critically acclaimed albums might produce more palatable results. Several of the albums I’ve featured so far have been best sellers as well as critics darlings, but none to the degree of today’s selection.

AC/DC’s Back in Black is considered one of the best rock albums of all time, and has sold more copies worldwide than anything but Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Embarrassingly, I don’t own it.

Back in Black was AC/DC’s seventh studio album, and the first following the death of original lead singer Bon Scott. The band considered splitting after Scott’s death but ended up enlisting the similar-voiced Brian Johnson, who also penned the lyrics for what would become their most successful album.

While I don’t own this album, I’m certainly familiar with the title track (today’s SOTD) as well as ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and opening track ‘Hell’s Bells.’ The rest are new to me, but not for long. I always like to add a few titles to my collection during these retrospective weeks, and I just ordered this one.

[Verse 1]
Back in black, I hit the sack
I’ve been too long, I’m glad to be back
Yes I’m, let loose from the noose
That’s kept me hanging about
I keep looking at the sky cause it’s getting me high
Forget the hearse cause I’ll never die
I got nine lives, cat’s eyes
Using every one of them and running wild

[Chorus]
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, back
Well I’m back in black
Yes I’m back in black

[Verse 2]
Back in the back of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet, I’m a power pack
Yes, I’m in a bang with a gang
They’ve got to catch me if they want me to hang
Cause I’m back on the track and I’m beatin’ the flack
Nobody’s gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now I’m just making my play
Don’t try to push your luck, just get out of my way

[Chorus]
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, back
Well I’m back in black
Yes I’m back in black

[Guitar Solo 1]

[Chorus]
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, Yes I’m back
Well, I’m back, back
Well I’m back in black
Yes I’m back in black

[Guitar Solo 2]

[Outro]
Hooo yeah Ohh yeah
Yes I am Oooh yeah
Yeah Oh yeah
Back in now
Well I’m back, I’m back Back
I’m back Back, I’m back Back, I’m back Back
I’m back Back Back in black
Yes I’m back in black
Outta sight

  1. Dana says:

I have such a clear memory of being at junior high friends Danny and Mike Garcia’s house when they played this album for me for the first time. I sat patiently listening to those chiming bells with the slow guitar build into “Hell’s Bells.” I can’t say that I was a hard rock fan even back then (though I was more so than today), but there was something visceral about this record that worked for me at the time.

Nowadays, every once in awhile, I turn the dial to the rock station (25 on Satellite radio) and revel in nostalgia. I get away with that when I’m either alone or with my son. Of course, if Amy is in the car, that reveling lasts for all of 10 seconds until she insists that we change the channel to 32-The Bridge mellow classic rock.šŸ˜„
