Song of the Day #2,887: ‘Run To You’ – Bryan Adams

bryan_adams_recklessMany of my impulse digital music purchases are of artists considered cheesy or uncool. I guess you could call them guilty pleasures, though I’ve never felt guilty listening to a song I truly like.

One such purchase was Bryan Adams’ 1984 smash Reckless. Bryan Adams is decidedly uncool (and Canadian!) but there is no denying the appeal of this album’s hits: ‘Summer of ’69,’ ‘Somebody,’ ‘Heaven’ and ‘Run To You.’

I’d never really listed to the lyrics of ‘Run To You’ very closely, so I only just realized that this is one of the most immoral songs I’ve ever heard, sung from the perspective of an unapologetic cheater.

She says her love for me could never die
But that’d change if she ever found out about you and I

Oh, but her love is cold
Wouldn’t hurt her if she didn’t know, cause
When it gets too much
I need to feel your touch

I’m gonna run to you
I’m gonna run to you
Cause when the feeling’s right I’m gonna run all night
I’m gonna run to you

She’s got a heart of gold, she’d never let me down
But you’re the one that always turns me on, you keep me comin’ ’round

I know her love is true
But it’s so damn easy makin’ love to you
I got my mind made up
I need to feel your touch

I’m gonna run to you
Yeah, I’m gonna run to you
Cause when the feeling’s right I’m gonna stay all night
I’m gonna run to you

Yeah, I’m gonna run to you
Oh, when the feeling’s right I’m gonna run all night
I’m gonna run to you

Oh, I’m gonna run to you
Yeah, I’m gonna run to you
Cause when the feeling’s right I’m gonna stay all night
I’m gonna run to you

Oh, I’m gonna run to you
Yeah, when the feeling’s right I’m gonna stay all night
Oh, when the feeling’s right now
Oh, yeah, when the feeling’s right now

I’m gonna run to you
Oh, oh

Yeah, I’m gonna run to you
Yeah, now
Oh, I’m gonna run to you, run to you
Yeah, I’m gonna run to you

  1. Dana says:

I really never cared for Bryan Adams and I was way too overexposed to him in high school, particularly this album. I must admit, however, that, with the perspective of thirty years, many of these 80’s songs take on a glow of nostalgia, even the ones I was less fond of. So, I’m kinda diggin’ the throwback Thursday.

The story I heard about the lyrics to this song is that the object of his cheating desires is not another woman but his guitar. As a guitar player myself, I wrote a similar song many years ago when a girlfriend complained to me that I spent more time on my guitar than I did with her. Fact of the matter was, my guitar had nicer curves. If this story is true, which I suspect it is, it makes the song far less immoral, in my opinion.
