Song of the Day #2,626: ‘Winter’ – Tori Amos

020415_torireissuesfeatIt’s a bit of a cheat to list Tori Amos’ debut album Little Earthquakes this week, because the album isn’t new to me. In fact, when it came out I was convinced it was close to a masterpiece.

But Amos lost me somewhere down the line… perhaps on her sophomore album, Under the Pink. Not only did I never own another of her records, but I haven’t listened to this one since the year it came out.

So yes, it was a torrid but very brief love affair I had with Ms. Amos. Glancing at the titles, I didn’t remember any of the songs on this record that I once held in such high esteem.

But today’s SOTD, ‘Winter,’ was immediately familiar once it started playing. Same goes for ‘Crucify,’ the album’s first single, and ‘Silent All These Years.’ All great songs.

Amos went on to do a lot of weird stuff over the next two decades, but I have a feeling it was a mistake to let this album slip away.

[Verse 1]
Snow can wait, I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose, get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter
I put my hand in my father’s glove

I run off where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice: “You must learn to stand up
For yourself, cause I can’t always be around”
He says:

[Chorus]
“When you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
When you gonna make up your mind?
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed”
I tell you that I’ll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

[Verse 2]
Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by and I’m here still waiting
Withering where some snowman was

“Mirror mirror, where’s the crystal palace?”
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

[Chorus]
“When you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
When you gonna make up your mind?
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed”
I tell you that I’ll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

[Bridge]
Hair is grey and the fires are burning
So many dreams on the shelf
You say “I wanted you to be proud of me”
I always wanted that myself

[Chorus]
“When you gonna make up your mind?
When you gonna love you as much as I do?
When you gonna make up your mind?
Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead”
I tell you that I’ll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

[Outro]
Never change
All the white horses, ah
Hmm

I liked the lyrics but then the coquettish, flirty face was so incongrous that I was turned off. What’s up with that?

I can’t recall if I owned or heard this album, though I am familiar with “Crucify.” I became briefly obsessed with Amos when I heard “Cornflake Girl” playing while I was in the bathroom of a movie theater. My love of that song led me to buy her second album, Under the Pink. I liked parts of that record, but it really was all about “Cornflake Girl” for me. To me, Amos is a cross between Kate Bush and Fiona Apple. And, like those artists, some of the songs work for me far better than others.

    She has a lovely voice
