Song of the Day #2,606: ‘400 Lux’ – Lorde

lorde_royalsI forgot about Lorde.

Two years ago she was the biggest thing in music, wasn’t she? Her debut album was the hottest record out there and she epitomized the smart millennial mindset that scoffed at superficiality while grooving to Beyoncé and Drake.

She was cool, weird, talented and on her way to super stardom before she even turned 18.

All of that is still probably true. But it says a lot about the instant pleasure society we now live in that a year or so without a meaningful cultural contribution from a star feels like an eternity.

Can you remember the last month you didn’t hear something by, or about, Taylor Swift? She’s an expert at self-saturation. I bet Lorde doesn’t want that. She’ll be back with a new record in due time, but in the meantime she won’t be blowing up your Instagram feed.

[Verse 1]
We’re never done with killing time
Can I kill it with you?
Till the veins run red and blue
We come around here all the time
Got a lot to not do, let me kill it with you

[Pre-Chorus]
You pick me up and take me home again
Head out the window again
We’re hollow like the bottles that we drain
You drape your wrists over the steering wheel
Pulses can drive from here
We might be hollow, but we’re brave

[Chorus]
(And I like you)
I love these roads where the houses don’t change (and I like you)
Where we can talk like there’s something to say (and I like you)
I’m glad that we stopped kissing the tar on the highway (and I like you)
We move in the tree streets
I’d like it if you stayed

[Verse 2]
Now we’re wearing long sleeves
And the heating comes on
(You buy me orange juice)
We’re getting good at this
Dreams of clean teeth
I can tell that you’re tired
But you keep the car on
While you’re waiting out front

[Pre-Chorus + Chorus]

[Verse 1 – Bridge]

[Chorus]

[Outro]
And I like you…

  1. Dana says:

Yes, she is not the marketing juggernaut that is Swift, but I’m sure she’ll be back.

  2. Maddie says:

She’ll for sure be back, but she is a very quiet person. Ironically the most publicity she’s probably gotten between albums is from all the pictures Taylor has posted with her.
