Song of the Day #2,604: ‘War is Kind’ – swp1230

Screen Shot 2015-09-03 at 9.48.33 PMI wanted to write a quick entry on Jakob Dylan’s ‘War is Kind,’ and I was pretty sure I’d never featured it on the blog. But lo and behold, nearly seven years ago, the track was Song of the Day #129. But I won’t let that stop me.

Sitting in for Jakob Dylan is a man identified on YouTube only as swp1230. He’s a talented guitarist and singer who apparently has no interest in making his real name known.

The reason this song is on my mind is that it has become part of my morning ritual when taking my 9 year-old to school. As we embark on the 6-minute ride, Fiona finds Jason Derulo’s ‘Want to Want Me’ on my car stereo and we blast that for the first half of the trip.

Then, because for some strange reason my car reverts to alphabetical order when you play a specific track, Jakob Dylan’s ‘War is Kind’ starts up. This song was new to Fiona but she took to it immediately, and now she insists on hearing both DeRulo’s disco-pop come-on and Dylan’s anti-war folk song. It’s a brilliant one-two punch.

Mother you saw my eyes
On the Fourth of July
Under a banner of roman candles
Mother war is kind of
Like hell but I am fine

Brother have you gone west?
You followed through once yet?
You are still younger, how dare you forget
Brother war is best
In the morning when you’ve had rest

Like a lost dog between houses
In the unknown open country
Line up at dawn to see who’s missing
My age is a metaphor
That only speaks of everything before

Daughter you wear my name
Those are my eyes, keep ’em raised
I may have scars but I give more than I take
Daughter war is safe
Where you are far away

Now lover are you gone?
My heart has taken too much on
One octave lower than thunder it drums
Lover war is done
In more ways than just one

Like a lost dog between houses
In the unknown open country
Like an outlaw now standing at the foot of infinity
The sun is wild, just in front of me

I think you buried the lead here. You OWN a Jason Derulo song? Were you not railing against him on this very blog? Daniel tried to leave him on the radio the other day and, while his current hit is arguably better than other things he has done, I was not a happy camper.

Believe me, I’m as surprised as you. But that’s a great song!
