Song of the Day #2,587: ‘Cheerleader’ – OMI

omi_cheerleaderAfter a few weeks in 1982, I’m bringing things back to 2015, taking a look at the Billboard charts as summer wraps up and makes way for fall.

The battle for Song of the Summer has no clear winner this year. My vote goes to Walk the Moon’s ‘Shut Up and Dance,’ which had a strong Billboard run and embodies the spirit a Song of the Summer should exhibit.

But the title might eventually end up with OMI and ‘Cheerleader,’ a song the Jamaican singer has been working on since 2008. The song took off this year, as a couple of remixes and a host of online videos turned it into a viral hit.

The song has spent five weeks at #1, four of those uninterrupted, and maybe just in time to earn the Song of the Summer designation (who decides that, anyway?).

‘Cheerleader’ is another example (following Andy Grammer’s ‘Honey I’m Good’) of a song where the male singer praises himself for not succumbing to the temptations of other women. Fidelity is nice, but is the romantic bar really that low these days?

When I need motivation
My one solution is my queen
Cause she’ stay strong (yeah yeah)
She is always in my corner
Right there when I want her
All these other girls are tempting
But I’m empty when you’re gone
And they say

Do you need me
Do you think I’m pretty
Do I make you feel like cheating?
And I’m like no, not really cause

Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her
Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her

She walks like a model
She grants my wishes like a genie in a bottle (yeah yeah)
Cause I’m the wizard of love
And I got the magic wand
All these other girls are tempting
But I’m empty when you’re gone
And they say

Do you need me?
Do you think I’m pretty?
Do I make you feel like cheating?
And I’m like no, not really cause

Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her
Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her

She gives me love and affection
Baby did I mention, you’re the only girl for me
No I don’t need a next one
Mama loves you too, she thinks I made the right selection
Now all that’s left to do
Is just for me to pop the question

Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her
Oh I think that I found myself a cheerleader
She is always right there when I need her

This song, in my opinion, doesn’t even come close to the song of the summer. Being a hit isn’t enough. The song has to exude a fun and carefree vibe, usually a party or vacation vibe emblematic of the season. “Shut up and Dance” fits the bill. This one doesn’t.

I think the version of the song that has it atop the charts is the Felix Jaehn remix, which gives it more of that vacation vibe, as does the video.

And how does OMI’s Jamaican accent not shout party to you?

That version is better, but it still doesn’t say “song of the summer” to me. Here is an interesting article from the Toronto Star listing contenders (including the two songs we are discussing), but concluding that, for the first time in years, there really is not a definitive song for the summer of 2015.
