Song of the Day #2,573: ‘1999’ – Prince

prince_1999Las week I counted down my personal favorite albums of 1982, a list that contained some great titles but made no claim to truly represent that year’s musical output.

I turned 10 that year, after all, and I haven’t spent the next 32 seeking out every album I missed during my childhood.

For the next two weeks, I’ll highlight tracks from some of the 1982 albums that might have made my list had I been more familiar with them.

Some of these albums are complete mysteries to me. Others I know somewhat, usually through their hit singles.

Such is the case with today’s selection, Prince’s 1999. Both the title track and ‘Little Red Corvette’ are very familiar but I’ve never heard the rest of the album.

This was Prince’s fifth album but the first to truly break through. He followed 1999 two years later with the smash hit Purple Rain but this record was his first to crack Billboard’s top ten. The record’s synth-heavy sound also helped define the sound of the 80s.

I’ve always considered myself a fan of Prince from afar, even though I own only two of his 36 albums (Purple Rain and Sign o’ the Times). This one would probably be a great place to start if I wanted to dig in deeper.

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray

But when I woke up this mornin’
Coulda sworn it was judgment day

The sky was all purple
There were people running everywhere
Trying to run from the destruction
You know I didn’t even care

‘Cuz they say two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
So tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast

But life is just a party
And parties weren’t meant too last

War is all around us
My mind says prepare to fight

So if I gotta die
I’m gonna listen to my body tonight

Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
So tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999
Yeah

Lemme tell ya somethin’
If you didn’t come to party
Don’t bother knockin’ on my door
I got a lion in my pocket
And baby he’s ready to roar

Yeah, everybody’s got a bomb
We could all die any day
But before I’ll let that happen
I’ll dance my life away

They say two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
We’re runnin’ outta time
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

Say it 1 more time
Two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
No, no
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

Alright, it’s 1999
You say it, 1999
1999
1999 don’t stop, don’t stop, say it one more time

Two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
Yeah, Yeah
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999)

Yeah, 1999
Don’tcha wanna go
Don’tcha wanna go
We could all die any day
I don’t wanna die
I’d rather dance

  1. Dana says:

My first exposure to Prince came during my one and only summer at a sleep away camp. One of the kids had Prince’s first two albums tat preceded this one on cassette. Those records seemed like contraband at the time as much of the material was decidedly R rated.

With 1999, Prince became decidedly more commercial and less risqué. Still, he was the more adult, gritty and talented alternative to the King of Pop.

I too consider myself a Prince fan from the outside, and I have by and large lost track of his music over the past twenty years or so, though I have heard that he is continuing to put out great records. Nevertheless, I still consider Prince among a handful of musical geniuses and I really should at some point make a greater effort to hear what he has been doing after the party ended in 1999.
