Song of the Day #2,541: ‘Work This Body’ – WALK THE MOON

walk_the_moon_talking_is_hardWhile this year’s new releases have been a bit underwhelming, I did manage to discover one album I really love — a record released in mid-2014 that has picked up steam this summer due to its infectious lead single.

That album is WALK THE MOON’s Talking is Hard, a modern pop juggernaut packed with 12 inventive, hummable gems. The one you’ve no doubt heard is ‘Shut Up and Dance’ but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The band has a definite 80s pop influence (including Talking Heads and The Police) but they shouldn’t be pigeonholed. Today’s SOTD is squarely in Vampire Weekend territory, for example, and listening to the whole album makes it clear that they’re developing a sound and sensibility all their own.

[Verse 1]
It was a strange place and a tender age
I was just a babe in school
Saw them roll their eyes at me every time that I thought that I was cool
Well God knows I was no chosen one
That just wasn’t my prime
Yeah it’s just a matter of time, honey
It’s just a matter of time

[Chorus]
And I will work this body
I will burn this flame
Oh in the dead of night and in the pouring rain
Yeah I’m a workaholic and I swear, I swear
Yeah one day I will beat you fair and square

Show me what you got
Work this body on the floor
Who do you think you are?
Cmon meet me on the court

Que ferais-tu?
Putain, Je ne sais pas!

[Verse 2]
It ain’t no matter of “if” honey
It’s just a matter of “when”
Oh, some Sunday when it’s my face in the newspaper again
All the rag magazines, black limosines, they’ll be getting in line
Yeah it’s just a matter of time, honey
It’s just a matter of time

[Chorus]

Show me what you got
Work this body on the floor
Who do you think you are?
Cmon meet me on the court

Que ferais-tu?
Putain, Je ne sais pas!
Ne vien pas pleurer vers moi…

[Chorus]X2

I recently bought this album at your suggestion and with your gift card (thank you!). I’ve heard about half the album and have liked what I’ve heard.

We are loving this album. I told the kids yesterday that it reminds me of the feeling I had when first listening to the Fun debut. “Bright” is the word that pops into my mind whenever i hear it or reflect on it. Great and enjoyable music.

Clay, thank you for introducing this album to the family! 🙂 I listened to it on Spotify when it was first released because people at Emerson were excited about it, but promptly forgot about it after because I didn’t buy it then. It is such a fun and catchy album, and I am glad to be able to revisit it over and over again now! This song in particular is very fun, and I have skipped through the album to hear it a few times before.
