Song of the Day #2,516: ‘The Drugs Not Working’ – Ryan Adams

ryan_adams_rock_rollRyan Adams has averaged an album per year since his 2000 solo debut, Heartbreaker (before that, he released a trio of albums with Whiskeytown).

I’m only familiar with a handful of those records, and I definitely have a preference for his alt-country work, including Heartbreaker and the albums he recorded with The Cardinals.

I’m also a big fan of the more rock-focused Gold, probably his best album.

I did not, however, take to Rock N Roll, his hard-edged 2003 release. I admire his ability to skip between genres, but this just isn’t a genre I like.

The album received favorable reviews, as most of his work has, but it’s a far cry from the elegance of his best work.

I was shooting in the back of the car
When the windows smashed on the police cars
I was swimming through the streets of New York
With my cocaine dagger and throats to cut
And it was making her cry…
But it was making me high

She was a hooker at the age of sixteen
All she wanted was the money, she didn’t need an I.D.
She was a junkie, and I know it’s cliche
But then so was her life, I mean, she lived in L.A.
And it was making her cry…
But it was making her high

And it was making her cry…
And it was making her high

Riot in my skull
The demons are coming
Los Angeles is dead
These drugs ain’t working
Painted it all black
The chains are jerking
Los Angeles is dead
The drugs ain’t working
Riot in my skull
The demons are coming
Los Angeles is dead
The drugs ain’t working
Los Angeles is dead
The drugs ain’t working
Los Angeles is dead

Odd and interesting video, but I don’t care for the song. Way too repetitive in the chorus.
