Song of the Day #2,497: ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ – Elvis Presley

blue_hawaii_elvisElvis Presley might not have been the world’s best actor, and his films were never in danger of winning any awards, but you’d think the Academy would see past that to acknowledge the songs themselves.

Both ‘Love Me Tender’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock’ were written for films of the same names, and neither got a sniff of Oscar love.

But for my money, even those two snubs are overshadowed by this one.

#4 – Songs Snubbed by Oscar
‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ – Blue Hawaii

‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ is classic Elvis by any measure — among the very best songs he recorded, period, let alone for a movie. So what five songs edged it out for an Oscar nomination?

‘Bachelor in Paradise’ from Bachelor in Paradise; ‘Love Theme from El Cid (Falcon and the Dove)’ from El Cid; ‘Pocketful of Miracles’ from Pocketful of Miracles; ‘Town Without Pity’ from Town Without Pity; and ‘Moon River’ from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

And the winner was… ‘Moon River.’ At least they got that right! ‘Moon River’ is undeniably a classic song, and a classic movie song at that. It should have been in a showdown against ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love.’ Now that would have been a race!

Wise men say only fools rush in
But I cant help falling in love with you
Shall I stay
Would it be a sin
If I cant help falling in love with you
Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I cant help falling in love with you

Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling so it goes
Some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I cant help falling in love with you
For I cant help falling in love with you

This really is a snub! And I can’t believe the other songs you mentioned were ignored as well. Just crazy!

  2. Amy says:

Seriously… what is that all about? Nowadays, the opposite is true. The surest way to an Oscar nomination is to have a “celebrity” musician write/perform your song just so you can have them perform during the ceremony. Why on earth wouldn’t the Academy want Elvis singing/performing on their stage?!!?? Must investigate further!!

Well, at least they picked Moon River over those other losers; and I am very upset that Elvis was snubbed!
