Song of the Day #2,495: ‘Hindi Sad Diamonds’ – Moulin Rouge cast

moulin_rougeA little while into Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge is a moment when a portion of the audience decides they just can’t stick with a film this chaotic and assaulting.

The rest of us, who love the film, half agree with that assessment but manage to get caught up in the insanity just enough to make it through to the other side, where the true pleasures await.

That moment is the ‘Hindi San Diamonds’ scene.

I both admire and despise this section of the film. It certainly captures the dazzling chaos of the Moulin Rouge, especially for our gang of heroes, who are high on absinthe. But it’s also more visual and aural activity than the human brain can effectively process.

I don’t have the visuals here, but the audio still does the trick.

[Jim Broadbent:]
She is mine!!!!

[John Leguizamo:]
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
[louder]
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the…

[Alka Yagnik:]

(Baaje re meri paejaniyaan)
(Baaje re meri paejaniyaan)

Tere paas aaun teri
Saanson mein samaun teri

[Nicole Kidman:]
Oooo……

(Oooooo…. ooooo…… ooooo….. ooooo….)

Kiss…, hand…

Men cold…, girls old….
And we all lose our charms in the end…

[Jim Broadbent:]
She is mine!

[Richard Roxburgh (the duke):]
She is mine…

Indeed, by all rights, this is a scene, and movie as a whole, I arguably should have hated. And yet, I was drawn in and stayed in Baz’s world.

  2. pegclifton says:

    And I left it

This was the random song of the day? Funny 🙂 Yes, I was mesmerized by the world Baz created from the start. I also appreciated how he wanted to make the modern viewer feel the way the visitor to the Moulin Rouge might have felt at the time.
