Song of the Day #2,398: ‘3AM’ – Meghan Trainor

meghan_trainor_titleMeghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass’ didn’t make my list of 2014’s best songs, to the dismay of some of my readers.

Recently I bought Trainor’s album, Title, after my younger daughter asked me to download several of her songs. I figured I might as well spend the extra few bucks to get the whole record.

And while ‘Bass’ still doesn’t tickle my fancy the way it does for some, I am sufficiently impressed by the rest of the album to say one of its tracks might have made my best-of cut had I bought it sooner.

Today’s SOTD, ‘3AM,’ might have earned the honor. It’s a catchy ode to drunk-dialing that reminds me of Lily Allen’s wonderfully sassy debut, both musically and thematically.

Other highlights include ‘No Good For You,’ ‘Bang Dem Sticks,’ ‘Close Your Eyes’ and second single ‘Lips Are Moving,’ but the whole album is thoroughly enjoyable. ‘All About That Bass’ might be the most forgettable thing on it.

This is why I remain an album guy — talented artists almost always save their most interesting music for the deep cuts.

[Verse 1]
I can’t believe I’m still doing this
I told myself a month ago that I’d be through with this
I’m looking at my phone, and wondering if you’re home
I’m kinda tipsy, I ain’t tryna sleep alone
Somebody told me that some other girl was hugging you
Baby, you know I’m the one that should be loving you
You know we had a thing, baby it’s such a shame
I still get crazy every time I hear your name

[Pre-Chorus 1]
And I know it’s complicated
But you know I’m impatient

[Chorus]
3 AM
Yep, I’m texting you once again
Even though I’m hanging with my friends
I can’t help it, I can’t help myself, no
3 AM
I might be looking for a late night friend
And baby I can’t get you out my head
I can’t help it, I can’t help myself, no

[Verse 2]
Kinda stressing like I’m gonna have a heart attack
It’s been an hour and you haven’t even hit me back
Baby, keep it real, tell me what’s the deal
Cause I miss you, you don’t know how this feels

[Pre-Chorus 2]
I know it’s complicated
This always happens when I’m wasted

[Chorus]

[Bridge](2x)
I know, I know, I know it’s so wrong
Somebody take away my phone
Cause I’ve been drinking all night long
All night long, all night long

[Chorus]

I really don’t get how you don’t get “All About That Bass.” The song is utterly infectious, as is “Lips are Moving.” I’m glad, though not surprised, to hear that the rest of the album is good. I really think she is a talent.

I find everything about Meghan Trainor to be utterly delightful, so I’m happy to see her finding such success with this album.
