Song of the Day #2,377: ‘Blank Space’ – Taylor Swift

Best Songs of 2014 – #5
‘Blank Space’ – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift dominated the music scene last year with her first foray into pure pop, 1989. The album was the year’s top seller (even edging out the Frozen soundtrack in a photo finish) and showed up high on just about every critic’s list.

It’s tempting to call 1989 Swift’s most superficial record, but I think it’s generally as deep and satisfying as her previous work. It’s not the dessert, it’s the whole meal.

Sure, it has its clunkers (‘Welcome to New York,’ anyone?) but so do all of her albums. Swift has yet to put out a record that wasn’t about three tracks too long and this is no exception.

But the best work here is among her best work ever, and that’s saying something.

Speaking of the best work here, ‘Blank Space’ is a new pop classic. Swift, who has tirelessly explored her love life on song for years now, tackles the subject with a sense of irony that fits her well.

Warning a potential suitor of the “torture” that awaits them in her arms, she paints a funny, frightening picture of herself refracted through the media’s lens. It’s a brilliant piece of writing.

[Verse 1]
Nice to meet you, where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven sin
Saw you there and I thought
Oh my God, look at that face
You look like my next mistake
Love’s a game, want to play?
New money, suit & tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain’t it funny, rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let’s be friends
I’m dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I can make the bad guys good for a weekend

[Chorus]
So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
Cause we’re young and we’re reckless
We’ll take this way too far
It’ll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
But I’ve got a blank space, baby
And I’ll write your name

[Verse 2]
Cherry lips, crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You’re the King baby I’m your Queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
Wait the worst is yet to come, oh no
Screaming, crying, perfect storm
I can make all the tables turn
Rose gardens filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like
“Oh my God, who is she?”
I get drunk on jealousy
But you’ll come back each time you leave
Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

[Chorus]

[Bridge] (x2)
Boys only want love if it’s torture
Don’t say I didn’t say I didn’t warn ya

[Chorus]

Yay! 🙂 Glad to see Taylor made the top 5. This album keeps growing on me, and I agree that some of the best songs on it are her best work yet.

  2. Dana says:

Good pick. I guess I need to listen again to the rest of the album because, on first listen, I wasn’t overwhelmed.
