Song of the Day #2,322: ‘Chandelier’ – Jean Kelley

jean_kelleyI’m writing these posts a few days before the next episodes of The Voice, meaning two more people will have been sent home before the week is through.

For that reason, I’m not aiming to feature my favorite remaining contestants, or turn this theme week into a prediction of the final four. I will close out the week with performances by two of the strongest contenders, but today and tomorrow I’m featuring singers who have already packed their bags.

The distractingly named Jean Kelley didn’t make much of an impact on this season. She turned Blake and Gwen’s chairs with her Blind Audition performance of Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Already Gone’ then lost in the Battle Rounds to the horrid Sugar Joans. Both Adam and Pharrell tried to steal her and she chose Pharrell as her new coach.

She won her Knockout round, but was eliminated the following week when Pharrell chose to save Sugar Joans over her and Elyjuh René. So she has the dubious distinction of having lost to Sugar Joans twice. Ugh.

But her standout performance was in the Knockout round, where she delivered a stirring rendition of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ that remains one of my favorite moments on the show so far this year.

[Verse 1]
Party girls don’t get hurt
Can’t feel anything, when will I learn
I push it down, push it down
I’m the one “for a good time call”
Phone’s blowin’ up, ringin’ my doorbell
I feel the love, feel the love

[Pre-Chorus]
1 2 3, 1 2 3, drink
1 2 3, 1 2 3, drink
1 2 3, 1 2 3, drink
Throw ’em back till I lose count

[Chorus]
I’m gonna swing from the chandelier
From the chandelier
I’m gonna live like tomorrow doesn’t exist
Like it doesn’t exist
I’m gonna fly like a bird through the night
Feel my tears as they dry, I –
I’m gonna swing from the chandelier
From the chandelier

[Post-Chorus]
But I’m holding on for dear life
Won’t look down, won’t open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light
Cause I’m just holding on for tonight
Help me, I’m holding on for dear life
Won’t look down, won’t open my eyes
Keep my glass full until morning light
Cause I’m just holding on for tonight
On for tonight

[Verse 2]
Sun is up, I’m a mess
Gotta get out now, gotta run from this
Here comes the shame, here comes the shame

[Pre-Chorus + Chorus + Post-Chorus]

[Outro]
On for tonight
Cause I’m just holding on for tonight
Oh, I’m just holding on for tonight
On for tonight, on for tonight
Cause I’m just holding on for tonight
Cause I’m just holding on for tonight
Oh, I’m just holding on for tonight
On for tonight, on for tonight

  1. Dana says:

After this performance, I was convinced Jean would sail into the finals, but this was her one and only shining moment. Meanwhile, Amy slept through the performance, only to be awakened by Daniel repeatedly attempting to hit the high notes of the chorus the rest of the night and for a few days after. So this will give Amy a chance to hear what she missed.😄

  2. Amy says:

Yes, thank you. Great singer that Daniel is, he didn’t do this song any favors 🙂

  3. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

Yesss. You are completely right on Sugar Jones. This girl was so superior and it was absolutely ridiculous that Pharrell chose Sugar over her. This performance was amazing and it upset me greatly that she didn’t make it to the lives. And, yes, as Dana says I was kind of obsessed with this song which I wasn’t nearly as aware of until this performance. It was also a great introduction to the song for me.
