Song of the Day #2,317: ‘Anything We Want’ – Fiona Apple

Best Albums of the 10s So Far
#3 – Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel…

Fiona Apple released my second favorite album of the 90s (When the Pawn…) and my second favorite album of the 00s (Extraordinary Machine). Here she sits in the #3 spot for the 10s.

That’s a hell of a streak. Imagine if the woman put out more than one album per decade.

The Idler Wheel… is a much more stark and raw album than its two predecessors, which balanced the emotion with lush production values.

Here, Apple (serving as co-producer) has stripped everything down to her piano and various forms of percussion, from timpani drums to feet dragging through gravel. One song is punctuated by the sounds of children in a playground, their joyous cacophony offering an unsettling juxtaposition to the piano’s minor key.

This is an art album, through and through, the kind of record that demands attention. You don’t put The Idler Wheel… on in the background — you listen to it when you want to feel something. Anger, love, lust, sadness. A delicious mess of exposed nerves.

I expect nothing less from Fiona Apple, who pours every fiber into her infrequent albums. Apple doesn’t make music for the money or the fame, or even for the artistic expression. She makes music as therapy. She makes music because she has no other choice.

We’re just lucky we get to listen.

My cheeks were reflecting the longest wavelength
My fan was folded up and grazing my forehead
And I kept touching my neck to guide your eye to where
I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone

My scars were reflecting the mist in your headlights
I look like a neon zebra shaking rain off her stripes
And the rivulets had you riveted to the places that
I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone

And then we can do anything we want X3

Started out sippin’ the water
And now we try to swallow the wave
And we try not to let those bastards get us down
We don’t worry anymore
Cause we know when the guff comes we get brave
After all, look around, it’s happening, it’s happening, it’s happening now

Let’s pretend we’re eight years old playin’ hooky
I draw on the wall and you can play UFC rookie
Then we’ll grow up, take our clothes off and you remind me that
I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone

Here’s another album to which I need to pay closer attention, though I must confess that I am not often in the mood to hear a great deal of Apple’s intense music at one time.
