Song of the Day #2,155: ‘Ain’t It Fun’ – Paramore

paramoreI’ve noticed a trend in the top Billboard songs, especially as we move into summer.

The big hits tend to either be hedonistic party anthems or touchy-feely motivational songs that could come right out of a self-help book.

As recent examples of the latter, think Pharell’s ‘Happy’ and Nico & Vinz’s ‘Am I Wrong?’ (both in the top ten) as well as today’s SOTD, Paramore’s ‘Ain’t It Fun.’

Sitting in the 11th spot, this is a catchy tune about taking the leap into the big leagues and realizing you’re not so special anymore.

Paramore’s Hayley Williams wrote the song about her own move from Tennessee to Los Angeles to enter the music scene, but it could apply to a high school kid moving on to college, somebody entering a new job, or anybody who take a chance on bigger and better things.

[Verse 1]
I don’t mind
Letting you down easy but just give it time
If it don’t hurt now just wait, just wait a while
You’re not the big fish in the pond no more
You are what they’re feeding on

[Bridge]
So what are you gonna do
When the world don’t orbit around you?

[Chorus]
Ain’t it fun?
Living in the real world
Ain’t it good?
Being all alone

[Verse 2]
Where you’re from
You might be the one who’s running things
Well you could ring anybody’s bell and get want you want
You see it’s easy to ignore trouble
When you’re living in a bubble

[Bridge]
So what are you gonna do
When the world don’t orbit around you?
So what are you gonna do
When nobody wants to fool with you?

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Ain’t it good to be on your own?
Ain’t it fun, you can’t count on no one
Ain’t it good to be on your own?
Ain’t it fun, you can’t count on no one
Ain’t it fun?
Living in the real world

[Ad Lib]
Don’t go crying to your mama
‘Cause you’re on your own in the real world
Don’t go crying to your mama
‘Cause you’re on your own in the real world

Ain’t it fun? Ain’t it fun? Baby, now you’re one of us
Ain’t it fun? Ain’t it fun? Ain’t it fun?

[Chorus]

I’m not sure if there is a trend at work here. Just as there are apparently five plots for every movie, I think that basically holds true for songs as well. So, you have your party theme and inspirational theme, along with love song and love gone wrong/heartbreak songs. Not sure what the fifth theme would be. Maybe social/political songs?
