Song of the Day #1,854: ‘Baby I’ – Ariana Grande

ariana_grandeLately I’ve read a lot of praise of Ariana Grande’s new music, including frequent comparisons to her idol Mariah Carey. I get the sense that Grande, whom I know from her acting work on the Nickelodeon show Victorious, is on the verge of musical stardom.

I’m happy for her. She has great comic timing and delivery on the show, and has made enough of an impression to earn her own spin-off show, Sam & Cat, pairing her with iCarly alum Jennette McCurdy.

I have 7- and 11-year-old daughters, in case you’re wondering why I know any of this.

As for the music, this is one genre for which I have absolutely no patience. Put it right up there (or down there) with heavy metal. I just can’t spend more than 30 seconds listening to poppy R&B without looking for the stop button.

Baby I got love for thee
So deep inside of me I don’t know where to start
Yeah, yeah
I love you more than anything
But the words can’t even touch what’s in my heart
No, oh

When I try to explain it I be sounding insane
The words don’t ever come out right
I get all tongue tied (and twisted)
I can’t explain what I’m feeling
And I say baby, baby, baby

(Baby I) ooh baby, oh baby, my baby
(Baby I) ooh baby, baby I
All I’m tryna say is you’re my everything baby
But every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Baby, baby

Baby I’m so down for you
No matter what you do, (real talk), I’ll be around
Yeah, yeah, oh baby
See baby I been feelin’ you
Before I even knew what feelings were about
Oh baby

When I try to explain it I be sounding all crazy
Words don’t ever come out right
I get all tongue tied (and twisted)
I can’t explain what I’m (feeling)
And I say baby baby, baby

(Baby I) ooh baby, oh baby, my baby
(Baby I) ooh baby, baby I
All I’m tryna say is you’re my everything (baby)
But every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Baby, baby

Straight up, you got me,
All in, how could I not be,
I sure hope you know
If it’s even possible, I love you more
Than the word love can say it
It’s better not explaining
That’s why I keep saying… Baby I

Ooh baby, oh baby, my baby
(Baby I) ooh baby, baby I
All I’m tryna say is you’re my everything baby
But every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Baby, baby
Baby
Baby, baby

(Baby I) ooh baby, oh baby, my baby
(Baby I) ooh baby, baby I
All I’m tryna say is you’re my everything baby
But every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Every time I try to say it
Words, they only complicate it
Baby, baby
Baby, baby

Well I don’t know her from Adam, but since my kids were fans of iCarly and I recently saw Sam and Cat recording on our DVR, I suspect they will be happy to weigh in on your post.😄

Meanwhile, this song sounds like the aborted child of Mariah and Beyonce. I too would be reaching for the stop button after about the 3rd “oh baby.” If this girl is going to make it in music, she needs to find better material than this.

  2. Clay says:

See, that’s where I think you’re wrong. Material like this has inexplicably made superstars out of many a singer.

  3. Amy says:

All I’m “tryna” say. Really? Tryna? 😦 I hope our children and my darling nieces have the good sense to enjoy the music, while simultaneously bemoaning any musical genre that encourages a lyric to be written (or sung) as “tryna.” As I bounce to the beat, I silently weep.

  4. Andrea Katz says:

I wonder if I have the same bones, down deep…
