Song of the Day #1,833: ‘Cups’ – Kurt Schneider, Sam Tsui, Alex G, Kina Grannis

kurt_cupsI really need to see Pitch Perfect. The movie has become a cult hit and made a music star out of indie actress Anna Kendrick (who is a very cool and funny person, based on her Twitter feed).

And it spawned this ‘Cups’ sensation, which I’ve only experience in bits and pieces. I assume it comes from a scene in the film? It’s a very cute song, and the accompanying cup percussion is both an impressive challenge and pleasant to the ear.

Kurt Schneider and three friends perform the song, cup theatrics and all, in a single unbroken take. I wonder how many takes this took.

Yes, you do need to see Pitch Perfect. Very sweet and entertaining film, and Kendrick is quite endearing.

I first heard Cups in the movie, but it has since been in heavy rotation on the radio. The recorded version adds some instrumentation, which I think is a shame. I prefer it to be all cups.

This video is sensational, not just for the rhythmic feat, but also the great harmonization. Good stuff!

You haven’t see Pitch Perfect?!! How is that even possible? We’ve seen it about a dozen times for crying out loud. It’s a famiy favorite (well, at least for the kids and me. Dana may have only seen it once or twice πŸ™‚ Cups is her audition for the acapella club, and its simplicity/compexity provides all they need to know about what they’re getting into by bringing her into the fold. Such a great film. Go watch it right now! πŸ™‚

As you know from yesterday’s comment, I was anticipating this clip. I’ve watched it several times and I get dizzy each time. So impressive. When they start tossing the cups back and forth at the end of the song, I’m beyond amazed.

because you really do need to see the inspiration for the Cups phenomenon…
