Song of the Day #1,823: ‘La Cienega Just Smiled’ – Ryan Adams

ryan_adams_goldThe family is back from our 10 days in California, and this week’s songs will stick to that theme (sort of).

I have to start with a song that’s been running through my mind for almost a week now, ever since we drove into L.A. for the second half (or third third, if you count the drive from San Francisco south) of our trip.

Our hotel, the Andaz West Hollywood, was one block from La Cienega Boulevard, so that was the road we took most often when embarking on adventures. And every time I drove it, this Ryan Adams song played in my head.

I loved this song long before I traveled the road it’s named after, but I love it even more now.

“Ah the night…here it comes again”
It’s on with the jeans, the jacket and the shirt
How’d I end up feeling so bad
For such a little girl

And I hold you close in the back of my mind
Feels so good but damn it makes me hurt
And I’m too scared to know how I feel about you now
La Cienega just smiled, “see ya around”

And I hold you close in the back of my mind
And raise my glass ’cause either way I’m dead
Neither of you really help me to sleep anymore
One breaks my body and the other breaks my soul
La Cienega just smiles as it waves goodbye
“Ah the night, here it comes again”

It’s off with the jeans, the jacket and the shirt
How’d I end up feeling so bad
For such a little girl

And I hold you close in the back of my mind
Feels so good but damn it makes me hurt
And I’m too scared to know how I feel about you now
How I feel about you now
La Cienega just smiles and says, “I’ll see you around”

    Welcome back!

Beautiful song. When we did our LA part of the California vacation, it was mostly Randy Newman’s “I Love LA” that came to mind, especially when we drove on Santa Monica Blvd. and the other streets mentioned in the song. Of course, since our iPod PCH mix included the song, I would usually just put it on or, when it wasn’t playing, I would sing the applicable street name when we turned onto the street, hoping my family would join in by adding “we love it.” (I think I was able to get them to do it at least once😄)
