Song of the Day #1,782: ‘Get Lucky’ – Daft Punk

daft_punk_ramMy wife came home from work the other day and asked “Have you ever heard of a band called Daft Punk?”

I had, though I wasn’t able to offer any information about them. I knew the name but nothing else. Apparently her students were going on and on about the band’s new album and were incredulous that she was blissfully unaware.

You can guess what happened next.

We have seen references to Daft Punk at every turn for the past week. Giant spreads in our magazines, articles in the newspaper, mentions on TV. It’s become a running joke that Daft Punk is inescapable and all it took was one mention in a high school classroom.

Of course there is a good reason for both their absence and their sudden presence. The band just released its first studio album in eight years. They did score the Tron remake a couple of years back but they are ripe for the kind of comeback stories that wind up dominating the entertainment media.

Daft Punk are a couple of French DJs who always perform in costume (robot suits and what look like motorcycle helmets). Their music is a blend of electronica and you-name-it. ‘Get Lucky,’ the first single from their new album (Random Access Memories), is pure disco. Other tracks tap into rock, funk, folk and classical styles.

While electronica is decidedly not my thing, I’m intrigued by everything I’ve read about Daft Punk. And I love this song in all its cheesy glory.

[Verse 1: Pharrell]
Like the legend of the phoenix
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning
The force from the beginning

[Hook: Pharrell]
We’ve come too far
To give up who we are
So let’s raise the bar
And our cups to the stars
She’s up all night ’til the sun
I’m up all night to get some
She’s up all night for good fun
I’m up all night to get lucky
We’re up all night ’til the sun
We’re up all night to get some
We’re up all night for good fun
We’re up all night to get lucky (x5)

[Verse 2: Pharrell]
The present has no ribbon
Your gift keeps on giving
What is this I’m feeling?
If you want to leave, I’m wit’ it

[Bridge: Daft Punk]
We’re up all night to get (x4)
We’re up all night to get back together
We’re up all night (let’s get back together!)
We’re up all night to get funky
We’re up all night to get lucky
We’re up all night to get lucky (x8)

[Outro x4]
We’re up all night to get lucky

I have remained blissfully unaware of this band until today.

This sound wasn’t really my cup of tea in 1978, and isn’t today. Still. As disco goes, with a nod to Earth, Wind & Fire, this isn’t bad. The repetitive and at one point electronic chorus tries my patience a bit though.

This did it. I declare the music business dead and I’m not interested in new music unless it can somehow rise like the phoenix. But I’m sure I’ll be watching some show in the near future and this will be playing in the background. I want the new Steve Earle album and I’m waiting on Dylan’s Bootleg Series #10. Otherwise, I have maybe three thousand albums at this point and won’t be bored one bit. The other day I was exposed to Glen Miller’s version of “Three Little Fishes,” and as corny as it was it entertained me ten times as much as this song. The answer, my friend, is back where things begin. Hey, “all ends with beginnings.”
