Song of the Day #1,670: ‘Climax’ – Usher

usherComing in at third place on the Village Voice Pazz & Jop singles list is ‘Climax’ by Usher.

Right off the bat I’m getting a bad feeling about this. How far is Usher from Miguel, really, in the grand scheme of things? I’ve never liked Usher or his music, and I seriously doubt this song will change that.

Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

I wasn’t wrong. This is better than the Miguel song, I’ll give it that, but I can only listen to about 30 seconds of Usher’s whining falsetto before looking for the pause button.

My problem with most R&B songs is that they don’t go anywhere. What you hear in the first half-minute is basically repeated throughout on a loop. Of course there are exceptions, but this isn’t one of them.

So far, the critics are letting me down. Was 2012 really that bad a year for music?

Going nowhere fast
We’ve reached the climax
We’re together, now we’re undone
Won’t commit so we choose to
Run away
Do we separate?
Don’t wanna give in so we both gave up
Can’t take it back, it’s too late, we’ve reached the climax

[Verse 1]
I’ve fallen somehow
Feet off the ground
Love is the cloud
That keeps raining down
Where are you now?
When I need you around
I’m on my knees, but it seems we’re

[Verse 2]
I gave my best, it wasn’t enough
You get upset, we argue too much
We made a mess of what used to be love
So why do I care, I care at all
At all
At all
At all

You say it’s better if we
Love each other separately
I just need you one more time
I can’t get what we had out my mind
Where are you now
When I need you around
I’m on my knees
But it seems we’re going

Yeah, don’t care much for this either. But as for 2012 in music, I hope that songs from the likes of fun., maroon 5, Bruno Mars, etc make this list. Sounds like this village voice list isn’t always on the mark.
