Josh Rouse is a great example of a genome artist. He didn’t open my eyes to something new or expand my musical horizons. He just landed right in the sweet spot of my established preferences.
He’s a little bit ‘Pure Pop,’ a little bit ‘Folk Rock Derivative,’ with a dash of ‘Melancholy’ for flavor. He’s Paul Simon (both pre- and post-Graceland) crossed with a more upbeat Elliott Smith and a less glam The Smiths.
And yes, he’s a terrific songwriter and performer. Of course that’s a prerequisite for anybody to show up on this list. Half the local bar bands in America will claim The Beatles and Bob Dylan as major influences, but that doesn’t mean they’re any good.
Rouse, though, is not just generally excellent, but specifically excellent in the ways that appeal most to me. That’s what the whole genome conversation is about… discovering which sounds, which moods, flip my switches more than others.
Love ain’t special
Love ain’t great
Lost in a fog
I’m using spite to find my way
Where did you go
I still curse you to this day
I miss the smile
I miss love laughing in my face
And when you coming ’round
Baby I’ve been so blue
And I sleep with the TV on
It’s the only sound, now love’s gone
I will recover
I will hear it whispered back
Until then I keep one leg up off that track
Cause he tells you
You are still upon his mind
He’ll get around to see you
When he finds the time
And when you coming ’round
Baby I’ve been so blue
And I sleep with the TV on
It’s the only sound, now love’s gone
And when you coming ’round
Baby I’ve been a fool
And I’ve already waited so long
So long my love has gone
And when you coming ’round
Baby I’ve been so blue
And I sleep with the TV on
It’s the only sound, now love’s gone
I still say that pure pop doesn’t flip your switch when you eschew the artists I mentioned yesterday.
All I know is how thrilled I was to hear the name of this blog in “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and FINALLY put it together! I think I gasped and shrieked causing my kids to roll their eyes.
He sounds good. I like this kind of music. I think in this particular song he’s showing himself off as a folk artist.
