I’ve been doing theme weeks of one sort or another for months now. In fact, I just checked and the last non-theme weekday song I posted was on March 2. I figured I’d spend this week on a handful of unrelated songs for a change.
But as I started compiling the tracks, I wound up stumbling upon a theme (of sorts) anyway. This week I’ll be looking back on the summer from various angles, using these songs as entry points.
First, the Olympics. I like to say I hate the Olympics, just because it’s the sort of statement that’s met with gasps of outrage. How can anybody hate the Olympics?
What I hate is the unrelenting hype, the never-ending ‘Matt Lauer live from the javelin course’ coverage, the parade of feel-good stories about people who’ve dedicated their lives and bodies to sports that nobody cared about for the past three years, eleven and a half months.
And I hate Olympic events that rely on judges. Track and field I get: this guy crossed the finish line before that guy. But gymnastics? Diving? Ice skating? When the outcome relies on the whim of the French judge, that’s not a real sport.
I’m writing this post the day before the opening ceremonies, but it’s not slated to run until the day after the closing ceremonies. So the entire 2012 Olympic games will pass between the time I hit ‘Schedule’ and the time anybody reads these words.
But even now, before a single medal has been awarded, I know that no moment in these games will stick with me more than the clip I’m posting today of Australian hurdler Michelle Jenneke’s warm-up routine before a recent qualifying race.
I first saw this thing about a week ago when it had a few thousand views on YouTube. As I write this, it has 14.5 million. Who knows how many it will have by the time this post sees the light of day.
Jenneke, who won this race but failed to qualify for the London games, has become an internet sensation not just because she’s incredibly hot but because she demonstrates such exuberance. In a demanding, high-pressure situation, she is all smiles — dancing, waving, thoroughly enjoying herself. After she wins — handily — she immediately seeks out her fellow racers for congratulatory hugs.
This is the definition of a feel-good video — and she’s incredibly hot. This is the sort of thing that could change my mind about the Olympics.
Somebody made the unfortunate decision to pair this video up with a dance song by Italian singer Sabrina Salerno. I was prepared to say that Ms. Salerno must be thrilled with the exposure, but then I discovered that the original video for ‘Boys’ is already one of the most-watched on YouTube.
That’s because it features Salerno frolicking in a pool wearing a white bikini top that repeatedly slips down to reveal her ample breasts in all their glory. The video takes the nip slip to a whole new level.
But even so, I’d much rather watch Michelle Jenneke’s hurdle dance party than the soft-core original video, and that’s saying something.
Boys, boys, boys
Boys, boys, boys

So… is this still the most memorable clip for you? Did you watch anything else? I watched about 45 minutes of Olympic coverage – the U.S. basketball team winning the gold and Mo Farah winning the gold for Britain. Have to say – I was totally engrossed in the whole Mo Farah storyline about 30 seconds in. Made me sad that I’d missed everything else!
Which one is Mo Farah? The Olympic moments I remember best (really, the only ones I watched) were Jessica Ennis winning gold in the heptathlon, Andy Murray and Serena Williams’ gold medal tennis matches and the U.S. basketball final.
Also, that South Korean fencer who was screwed out of a medal by a faulty timekeeper. I caught up with that story after the fact, and it was very compelling.
I was, like you, proudly avoiding the Olympics. Saw some of the opening and the watched the parts Amy discussed, the Mo Farrah because my nephew was over and turned on the games and then men’s basketball final yesterday. I can see being drawn into more of the games but I guess I just don’t want to.
Meanwhile this woman is quite sexy. Too bad she didn’t make it. Wonder what went wrong?
I honestly tried to watch the Olympics several times, but each and EVERY time I put it on there was beach volley ball, regular volley ball, and pool volley ball. Come on, other then the women’s outfits in beach volley ball, I couldn’t get the fascination with so much coverage. I had to watch Gabby on you tube to catch her performance and that was wonderful!
