Song of the Day #283: ‘Special’ – Garbage

mansonI won’t lie… today’s song is sort of a placeholder before I begin another theme week tomorrow. In my blog queue, I have a handful of songs that I’ve collected but never written about or featured. I grab them because I like them but they don’t make it onto the blog because I don’t really know what to say.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. As the old saying goes, writing about music is like dancing about architecture, so being at a loss for words over a particular song is in no way a knock on the song or the artist. On the contrary, maybe it’s the songs that you can’t explain away, the ones that appeal to you for reasons you can’t express, that really matter.

Of course now, in an effort to keep from underselling this song, I’m attaching more importance to it than it deserves. Can’t win, I guess.

I’ll leave it at this: I can listen to (and watch) Shirley Manson sing just about anything. And Garbage is one of the most under-appreciated bands of the past decade.

Also, I love the Chrissie Hynde impersonation Manson does at the end of the song as she cribs a line from ‘Talk of the Town.’ Apparently the band asked Hynde if they could use the lyric and she responded via fax, saying they could “sample her voice, her music or, indeed, her very arse.”

I’m living without you
I know all about you
I have run you down into the ground
Spread disease about you over town

I used to adore you
I couldn’t control you
There was nothing that I wouldn’t do
To keep myself around and close to you

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I’ve run out of patience
I couldn’t care less

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know

I used to amuse you
I knew that I’d lose you
Now you’re here and begging for a chance
There’s no way in hell I’d take you back

Do you have an opinion?
A mind of your own?
I thought you were special
I thought you should know
But I’ve run out of patience
I’ve run out of comments
I’m tired of the violence
I couldn’t care less

Okay, I admit that I was all set to bash Garbage, as I really haven’t liked the few other songs I had heard from them, but this song is pretty decent. Still, however, not the type of music I would feel much of a yen to pop in the CD player though.
