Song of the Day #222: ‘Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)’ – Bob Dylan

rondylaSticking with the Bob Dylan thread, I move on to this Mark Ronson-produced remix of the Blonde on Blonde song ‘Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll go Mine).’

Ronson, best known for producing albums for Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, released in 2007 his own album of cover songs, giving his treatment to the work of artists including Ryan Adams, The Smiths, Coldplay, Radiohead and Britney Spears.

This Dylan track, however, did not appear on Ronson’s album. It was released as a promotional piece for a Dylan compilation album out in late 2007. It also represents the first, and so far only, time Bob Dylan has sanctioned a remix of one of his songs.

I like what he’s done with this track… it has the same techno-retro soul sound he brought to Winehouse’s Back to Black. And of course Dylan nailed his part many years ago.

You say you love me
And you’re thinkin’ of me,
But you know you could be wrong.
You say you told me
That you wanna hold me,
But you know you’re not that strong.
I just can’t do what I done before,
I just can’t beg you any more.
I’m gonna let you pass
And I’ll go last.
Then time will tell just who fell
And who’s been left behind,
When you go your way and I go mine.

You say you disturb me
And you don’t deserve me,
But you know sometimes you lie.
You say you’re shakin’
And you’re always achin’,
But you know how hard you try.
Sometimes it gets so hard to care,
It can’t be this way ev’rywhere.
And I’m gonna let you pass,
Yes, and I’ll go last.
Then time will tell just who fell
And who’s been left behind,
When you go your way and I go mine.

The judge, he holds a grudge,
He’s gonna call on you.
But he’s badly built
And he walks on stilts,
Watch out he don’t fall on you.

You say you’re sorry
For tellin’ stories
That you know I believe are true.
You say ya got some
Other kinda lover
And yes, I believe you do.
You say my kisses are not like his,
But this time I’m not gonna tell you why that is.
I’m just gonna let you pass,
Yes, and I’ll go last.
Then time will tell who fell
And who’s been left behind,
When you go your way and I go mine.

Okay, now that’s just shocking 🙂 How odd to hear that sound emerge when you’re awaiting a Bob Dylan song. Does not compute.

Still, it is an intriguing enough experiment, though it’s not one I’m sure I’d want to hear repeated. I can’t decide if this is more Baz Luhrman takes on Shakespeare or Michael Bay takes on (over) Emily Dickinson. I’m leaning towards the former, but my jury is still out.

On another note, I just finished a very funny novel (I Love You, Beth Cooper), where one of the characters at one point says to another, “You know, he’s Jakob Dylan’s Dad.” 😉 Just wondering where tomorrow’s thread might take us…

I read that book… pretty funny. I pictured Michael Cera in the movie, but the kid they got looks like a good fit.

This is really pretty funky. Can’t say I would favor this over the original, but I kinda dig it.
