My 2008 discoveries

discoverI have some year-end stuff on the way but it’s not quite ready because I haven’t seen/heard all of the things I need to before I can put 2008 to rest. I plan to count down my top ten songs of the year as part of the Song of the Day series, and I’ll do that as soon as I’ve listened to the albums I just bought to see if anything on them will crack that list (so far I know at least one will).

In the meantime, I figured I’d list some people and things I very happily discovered this year. This list excludes anything I was a fan of prior to Jan. 1, 2008.

Please add your own discoveries in the comment section (and remind me of any I might have missed).

Presented alphabetically…

Junot Díaz
Erica Hill
Mad Men
My Morning Jacket
Nate Silver /
Tony Sparano
Matt Taibbi
TV on the Radio
The Twilight series
Vampire Weekend

Do Freida Pinto and Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire count? I’m not sure I discovered anything other than what was introduced to the world at large this year. Hmmm… . Intriguing. Well, I discovered the Davids – Archuleta and Cook, and, of course Jason Castro!!!! I also discovered the Twilight series (thank you, Alex) and am in the process of discovering Neil Gaiman. I discovered Michelle Obama 😉 and Sarah Palin (and Tina Fey’s brilliant depiction of her). I discovered FNL on DirectTV is a thing of beauty and that Riggins is an awesome boyfriend 😉 My musical discoveries came largely through this blog, though I did purchase Amy Winehouse’s CD after all her grammy love this past February. I, too, discovered Facebook. And Flair. And WordTwist. And root beer? I’ll reflect some more and then return.

I was reminded yesterday that my favorite discovery of 2008 is Russell Brand, who slayed me in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and amused me in Bedtime Stories. He was an absolute find.

I also discovered Jason Mraz this past year and lots of acoustic versions and covers on the Coffee House on Sirius Radio (Stevie Nicks doing “Free Fallin'” for instance).

Through my children, I discovered Paramour and Simple Plan and Total Drama Island – all family entertainment that I enjoyed almost as much as they did.

Finally, I discovered the joy of Wii – boxing, tennis, bowling – just making Mii’s for that matter – all simply delightful.
