Song of the Day #104: ‘I’ll Be Back’ – The Beatles

Most discussions of The Beatles’ best albums seem to center around Rubber Soul, Revolver and Abbey Road. And I have no argument with that, as they are all incredible, classic albums.

But my personal favorite may well be A Hard Day’s Night. Released as the soundtrack of the film of the same name, itself a classic, this album contains thirteen stellar songs, including such immortals as the title track, ‘If I Fell,’ ‘I Should Have Known Better,’ ‘And I Love Her,’ ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ and ‘Things We Said Today.’ I’ll stop there rather than just post the whole tracklist.

I believe those other albums are mentioned so often not just because of their great songs but because they are excellent examples of how well The Beatles (and George Martin) used studio production to enhance their albums. They were the first artists to really stretch the boundaries of what you could do with sound in popular music, achieving effects on a 4-track recorder that sound fresh even now, in the age of GarageBand and the vocoder.

But I’m drawn to A Hard Day’s Night for the opposite reason. It’s well-produced, sure, but mostly it’s just a collection of superb songs performed with energy and passion by the world’s greatest band.

I’ve chosen to highlight ‘I’ll Be Back’ because it’s not one of the best-known Beatles tracks but, like so many of their songs, it should be.

You know, if you break my heart I’ll go
But I’ll be back again
‘Cause I told you once before goodbye
But I came back again

I love you so
I’m the one who wants you
Yes I’m the one who wants you

You could find better things to do
Than to break my heart again
This time I will try to show that I’m
Not trying to pretend

I thought that you would realize
That if I ran away from you
That you would want me too
But I got a big surprise

You could find better things to do
Than to break my heart again
This time I will try to show that I’m
Not trying to pretend

I want to go
But I hate to leave you
You know I hate to leave you

You, if you break my heart I’ll go
But I’ll be back again

As I said before, to me, Hard Day’s Night is the first truly great Beatles album. And I love this song, as well as the others you highlighted above. NOW I’m REALLY beginning to enjoy Beatles week:)
