Song of the Day #1,150: ‘Camouflage’ – Brad Paisley

A couple of times in recent months I’ve made an analogy between country music and big-screen comedies. Both are under-appreciated due to a perceived lack of sophistication and desire to appeal to the common denominator.

What’s the last Oscar-winning movie about which you could say, “Well, I really had a great time watching that!”? I enjoyed The King’s Speech, The Hurt Locker and Slumdog Millionaire as much as the next person but I’m not going to throw any of them into my DVD player when I want to lean back and laugh for two hours.

Brad Paisley writes crowd-pleasing music. His CDs should come with a bucket of popcorn. Sure, he’s recorded his share of tear-jerkers, in the traditional country fashion, but primarily he’s out to entertain.

There is perhaps no better example than ‘Camouflage,’ the fourth track on This is Country Music.

This ode to the south’s tackiest fashion trend is vintage Brad Paisley — hilarious lyrics, an addictive sing-along melody, fantastic guitar work and an atmosphere of pure fun. Listening to this, you know it’s got to be a blast in concert. At moments like this, his albums feel like a concert.

These lyrics are priceless. I’m particularly fond of the juxtaposition between a white tail deer and a redneck girl, and the verse about prom cracks me up every time. I also love how Paisley slips a little social commentary about the Confederate flag into a redneck anthem, and then slips into ‘Dixie’ on his final guitar solo.

I can’t think of another artist whose music is this consistently fun.

Kevin wasn’t really all that popular in school
But I remember well when I thought that guy is pretty cool
He pulled into the parking lot and everybody cheered
Because he had gone and painted his entire Chevy Cavalier

Camouflage, camouflage
It disappears when it pulls out of his garage
Camouflage, camouflage

I asked Jenny to the prom and her mom knew how to sew
So she made a matching tux and gown from duck blind Mossy Oak
We took pictures in the backyard before we went to the dance
And the only thing that you can see is our faces and our hands

Camouflage, camouflage
You should have seen have seen the way it popped with her corsage
Camouflage, camouflage
Ain’t nothing that doesn’t go with Camouflage

You can blend in in the country
You can stand out in the fashion world
Be invisible to a white tail and irresistible to a redneck girl

Camouflage, camouflage
Oh you’re my favorite color, camouflage

Well the stars and bars offend some folks and I guess I see why
Nowadays there’s still a way to show your southern pride
The only thing as patriotic as the old red white and blue
Is green and gray and black and brown and tan all over too

Camouflage, camouflage
Designed by Mother Nature and by God

Camouflage, camouflage
Oh you’re my favorite color, camouflage

This is definitely a style of country more to my liking–its got that more muscular mix of bluegrass and honky tonk. And the clever lyrics are an added bonus. Good stuff.

If all goes well, you should be seeing Brad in concert on your next BP weekend SOTD. I’m sure you will love both his funny and his serious sides. 🙂
