Song of the Day #1,502: ‘King’s Highway’ – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

The next group of artists in my musical genome belong to a category I’m labeling “FOLK ROCK DERIVATIVES.”

The way I see it, most modern rock music derives either from folk, pop or the blues. I have examples of all three in the 35 artists I’m featuring during this series, but I have designated categories for only the first two.

The reason I’m calling this group of bands “FOLK ROCK DERIVATIVES” and not just folk rockers is they have all moved well past those roots into many different styles of music. But there’s no denying their earliest influences.

Song of the Day #1,464: ‘Crystal River’ – Mudcrutch

I love Tom Petty, and I love how he reunited with his early band Mudcrutch to release an album in 2008. But nothing can excuse a song like this one lasting nine minutes, especially given that there are about 12 words in the whole song.

I am a vehemently anti-jam band man (say that five times fast). You can take your Phish, your Dead, your Dave Matthews Band and put them on mute. I have no interest in swaying for five minutes while a bearded man noodles away on his electric guitar.

Damn the Torpedoes – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1979)

Few artists can put out an album on which every song sounds like a billboard hit (whether it was or not). Tom Petty has done it twice.

Full Moon Fever – Tom Petty (1989)

The second Tom Petty album on this countdown, Full Moon Fever, is a collection of pop hits that’s as much fun as you can have wearing headphones. I can’t even think about this album without smiling.

Full Moon Fever is packed with wonderful surprises, from the “little freak with the lunch pail purse” who populates ‘Zombie Zoo‘ through the sweet lullaby of ‘Alright For Now‘ to Petty’s acknowledgement that he’s been to Micanopy and his middle name is Earl in ‘A Mind With a Heart of its Own.’

Song of the Day #1,391: ‘Handle With Care’ – Traveling Wilburys

Best Albums of the 80s – #13
Vol. 1 – Traveling Wilburys (1988)

As one YouTube poster commented just a week ago, the Traveling Wilburys were “The Avengers of classic rock.”

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne make sense as friends but not necessarily as band mates. Each brings his own distinctive vocal and writing style to the mix… how could they possibly gel?
