Other than Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, the rap album that showed up on the most year-end lists in 1992 was The Pharcyde’s Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde.

This is the debut album of a Los Angeles rap band that still performs today even though their last album came out a decade ago. in contrast to Dre’s focus on drugs and gang-banging, this album (and group) lean more toward ribald humor.

Song of the Day #226: ‘Drop’ – The Pharcyde

pharcydeApparently the celebrated, world-renowned Jamie Thraves got the inspiration for his backward Coldplay video in part from Spike Jonze’s video for The Pharcyde’s ‘Drop.’

This song marks a first for the Song of the Day series… the first time I’m featuring a song I’ve never heard of by a group I’ve never heard of. According to AllMusic.com, The Pharcyde was “an influential alternative rap quartet from South Central Los Angeles” who had fleeting success in the early to mid-90s.
