Song of the Day #415: ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ – The Beatles

beatles-i-saw-her-standing-thereIt’s amazing how, nearly 40 years after they split, The Beatles remain extraordinarily relevant. Just in the past five years, their music has been showcased in a cult film beloved by teens and adults alike (Across the Universe), provided the inspiration for an elaborate Cirque du Soleil show and its accompanying soundtrack (Love) and served as the basis for a much anticipated Rock Band video game.

And now, as of last week, all of The Beatles’ album have been remastered and re-released for the first time since they showed up on CD 22 years ago. I gobbled those up when they first came out and at the time they sounded great (they were among the only CDs I owned). But when I listen to those CDs now, they stand out as far more muddied and far lower in volume than most of my music.

Song of the Day #277: ‘If I Fell’ – Evan Rachel Wood

evanrachelAcross the Universe is simultaneously one of the most unjustly maligned and disproportionally worshiped movies in recent history. It was largely panned by critics who found it corny, earnest and shallow… and it is the favorite film of hordes of mostly teenage fans who find it the pinnacle of romance.

I find both positions extreme, but if I had to throw my lot in with one of them it would be the romantics. Yes, Across the Universe is corny, earnest and shallow, but it has a vision and a spirit lacking in most studio offerings. And it has the music of The Beatles — two hours of some of the best songs ever written sung by pretty people with pretty voices. What’s not to like?

Song of the Day #211: ‘I Am the Walrus’ – fiomily

fiomilyOK, this might just be my favorite video on YouTube. I happened upon these sisters named Fiona and Emily (aged 14 and 16, though they look much younger in many of their clips) and they’re irresistible.

They are English girls currently living in Germany and they’ve posted a bunch of clips of Fiona playing guitar while they share vocals, often pulling off complex harmonies with ease.

Song of the Day #210: ‘All My Loving’ – Julia Nunes

nunesThis is turning into one of my favorite weeks in the Song of the Day series. There are just so many talented and interesting people out there, all waiting to be discovered on the wonder that is YouTube.

Today’s performer, Julia Nunes, is definitely the quirkiest I’ve encountered so far. In addition to her great voice and ukulele work, she is an expert sound mixer. Most of her videos consist of her on multiple instruments as well as harmony vocals and beat-box style percussion.

Song of the Day #136: ‘Oh! Darling’ – The Beatles

abbeyroadIs there any area in which The Beatles don’t stand head and shoulders above their peers? It occurs to me as I look at the iconic image to the right that this is only the band’s second-most famous album cover.

Abbey Road is an odd and wonderful album. Most of the second half is dedicated to a seven-song medley introducing such characters as Mean Mr. Mustard and Polythene Pam before launching into the anthemy singalong of ‘Carry That Weight’ and culminating in the symbolic finish of ‘The End,’ in which each Beatle trades off a solo on guitar or drums before capping off the album, and their career, with the profoundly simple phrase: ‘And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.’
