The week of January 5, 1985, saw two repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100: Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin‘ and Duran Duran’s ‘The Wild Boys.’
At #3 was a song decidedly less emblematic of the 1980s: The Honeydrippers’ cover of the 1959 hit ‘Sea of Love.’
The Honeydrippers was the brainchild of Led Zeppelin lead singer Robert Plant, who formed the group in 1981 to play some of his best-loved songs from the 50s. Band members rotated in and out, and included Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.
My apologies to daily commenter Dana, who thought he dodged a bullet when this song’s Throwback Weekend feature was passed up for a special 6,000th Song of the Day post a couple of weeks ago.
But no, Duran Duran’s ‘The Wild Boys’ was still at #2 on the Hot 100 the week of December 22, 1984. It sat behind Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin,’ which has already been covered on the blog.
The week of November 24, 1984, saw a number of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100. In order, they were Wham!’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,’ Prince’s ‘Purple Rain,’ and Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel For You.’
In the fourth spot, on its way to a two-week stint at #1 in December, was Daryl Hall & John Oates’ ‘Out of Touch.’ This was the duo’s sixth number one hit, and their last. ‘Method of Modern Love,’ from the same album, peaked at #5.
The week of December 10, 1984, saw four songs topping the Billboard Hot 100 that have already been featured on the blog. They were, in order, Billy Ocean’s ‘Caribbean Queen,’ Stevie Wonder’s ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You,’ Prince’s ‘Purple Rain,’ and Wham!’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.’
That brings us to #5, where R&B/funk singer Chaka Khan had her highest-charting song as a lead performer with ‘I Feel For You.’
We nearly had a Stevie Wonder two-fer this weekend, as the #1 song the week of October 27, 1984, was his ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You.’
But I featured that insipid track a week ago, so it’s just one Stevie Wonder song (a much better one) this weekend. Still, it’s impressive that Wonder was able to hold the #1 spot on the same week a decade apart.
