Song of the Day #5,545: ‘Applause’ – Lady Gaga

Throwing back to the week of September 7, 2013, it’s still Robin Thicke and ‘Blurred Lines’ in the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100. That song was a juggernaut, spending a total of 12 weeks at #1. I hope I’ve cycled through those 12 weeks by the time Throwback Weekends make it back to the 2010s.

At #2 and #3 are two more songs I’ve already featured: Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ and Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop,’ respectively. And it’s another female pop icon who lands at #4 and as today’s Song of the Day.

Song of the Day #5,524: ‘Holy Grail’ – Jay-Z feat. Justin Timberlake

Throwing back to the week of August 17, 2013, we’re once again going deep into the top ten before finding a song I haven’t featured.

The top five that week were, in order, Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines,’ Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop,’ Imagine Dragons’ ‘Radioactive,’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky.’ Those tracks were competing for Song of the Summer status for months that year.

Song of the Day #5,503: ‘Treasure’ – Bruno Mars

I’m developing a theory that the Hot 100 over the last two decades has been a lot more stagnant than in previous years. In other words, fewer songs are spending a longer amount of time in the upper echelons of the chart.

I’m basing this admittedly half-baked idea on the fact that the 2013 edition of Throwback Thursdays has produced the most repeats by far. Just take a look at the chart on the week of July 27, 2013.

Song of the Day #5,482: ‘Radioactive’ – Imagine Dragons

Audiences were in a frisky mood during today’s Throwback Weekend week of July 6, 2013. Topping the Billboard Hot 100 that week were Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ and Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky.’ Both songs have been featured on the blog, so that brings me to the week’s #3 song.

Imagine Dragons have never had a #1 hit, but the’ve had five songs reach the top ten (with four of those making the top five). ‘Radioactive’ performed the best of all, peaking at #3 but setting some impressive records in the meantime. For nearly a decade, this song was the track with the most consecutive weeks in the Hot 100 (87) before it was topped by The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ and later Glass Animals’ ‘Heat Waves.’

Song of the Day #5,461: ‘Cruise’ – Florida Georgia Line feat. Nelly

The week of June 15, 2013, is putting Throwback Weekends to the test. Not only has the #1 song already appeared on the blog, but so have numbers two through four. No worries, though… it’s called the Hot 100, after all.

Topping the charts that week was ‘Can’t Hold Us‘ by Macklemore — Ryan Lewis, still hanging on from three weeks ago. In second place was Justin Timberlake’s ‘Mirrors,’ which I wrote about nine years ago. At #3 was Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky,’ which I featured on the blog a decade ago in a post that makes me sounds like an old man shouting at a cloud. Finally, the fourth spot is occupied by Pink and Nate Ruess, whose ‘Just Give Me a Reason‘ featured on a recent edition of Throwback Weekends.
