‘Cheap Thrills,’ the latest from Sia, lands at #4 this week. This song was initially written for inclusion on Rihanna’s Anti but didn’t make the cut. It found a home on This is Acting, a collection of songs Sia wrote for other artists, and wound up as a hit for her.
‘Cheap Thrills’ likely would have been a hit for Rihanna as well — it’s very radio friendly — but I don’t know how well it would have fit on Anti, which largely eschews this sort of party song.
Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ video generated some controversy from those who thought an 11-year-old girl dancing in a nude body suit was catnip for pedophiles.
That controversy died down pretty quickly, though, as people realized how friggin’ good the song was, and what a talented dancer little Maddie Ziegler was. It clearly wasn’t a stunt but a real work of art on both of their parts.

‘Chandelier’ – Sia
I’d never heard of Sia before discovering the provocative video for ‘Chandelier,’ in which 12-year-old dancer Maddie Ziegler performs an avant garde routine wearing a flesh-colored leotard.
Some called the video a pedophile’s dream come true, but most people were just impressed by the kid’s dance moves.
I’ve been wanting to feature this song and video for several weeks now but I was caught up in the desert island picks.
I first discovered Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ through one of those annoying click-book Facebook posts by Huffington Post, Vulture or Slate: “You’ll be amazed by this new video by Sia!”
I hate falling for those things, but the truth is they’re often worthwhile. This one was.
I’m not familiar with Sia, but Wikipedia informs me that is the stage name of Sia Furler, an Australian pop/jazz singer.
Today’s track is similar to the Lana Del Rey track that started off the week — more about mood than melody. I’m not a big fan of songs that I can’t hum along to after a couple of listens.
