Song of the Day #6,592: ‘Not Strong Enough’ – Boygenius

Phoebe Bridgers’ next release (and most recent, at least until next month’s album drop) was her first full-length album with Boygenius.

She, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker reunited in 2023 to release The Record, an album that built on the promise of their 2018 EP. It was a major critical success, landing seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, and winning three.

Song of the Day #6,589: ‘Me & My Dog’ – Boygenius

In 2018, Phoebe Bridgers joined with fellow singer-songwriters Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus to form the supergroup Boygenius. Their first EP, self-titled, has a cover photo modeled after the debut of another supergroup, Crosby, Stills & Nash.

It’s funny to think of a “supergroup” comprised of three people 95% of music fans haven’t heard of, but if you’re into queer indie folk rock women, Boygenius is the Avengers.

Song of the Day #5,414: ‘Cool About It’ – Boygenius

The Record, the first full-length release by supergroup Boygenius, is one of the year’s most celebrated releases so far. Boygenius is a collaboration between indie rockers Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, a trio who have written and performed together since 2018 when not nurturing their own successful solo careers.

I’m quite familiar with Bridgers, who is a favorite of my daughters, but the other two artists are new to me. This lovely, powerful album suggests I should spend some time getting to know them as well.

Song of the Day #3,877: ‘Night Shift’ – Lucy Dacus

Drake occupies the 10th and 11th spots on Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop poll, by himself with ‘Nice For What‘ and paired with Travis Scott on ‘Sicko Mode,’ respectively.

At #12 is a song (and artist) that’s completely new to me: ‘Night Shift’ by Lucy Dacus.

Today is my daughter Fiona’s 13th birthday, so I hope ‘Night Shift’ is an appropriately celebratory song. Happy Birthday, Fiona!
