Wrapping up my week of ‘Let it Go’ covers is a version performed on four violins and a piano, all by the same person (though obviously not recorded at the same time — that would be a hell of a trick).
Caleb Hyles is an Auburn senior who sings lead vocals for a heavy metal band when he isn’t channeling Idina Menzel on Oscar-nominated Disney songs. I bet he’s really good at that, too.
This was the first ‘Let it Go’ variation to hit it big on YouTube, or at least the first one I saw.
My first thought was how impressive it is that Disney found so many singers who sound like Idina Menzel. Many YouTube commenters actually think it’s Menzel herself singing the whole thing (which would be quite the feat, but alas it isn’t the case).
Pentatonix won The Sing-Off two seasons ago and actually turned the grand prize — a recording contract — into a successful career. They have released two albums, one in the Billboard Top 20 and one in the Billboard Top 10. Their YouTube clips amass tens of millions of views.
While the acting awards are pretty much sewn up, along with Best Director, the Best Picture prize is a source of some suspense. American Hustle seems to have faded from its front-runner status, but will it be 12 Years a Slave or Gravity that scores the come-from-behind win?
